This series is just like the White Lotus with a Spanish twist

(and it is so good)

By

A luxury vacation resort that becomes the scene of a disappearance case? That, uh, sounds familiar. Right? Yes, this series is filled with intrigue and a dark twist where usually rich people are the victims, but… Big but. That’s not what we’re talking about today. There is a new Spanish-language series on Netflix that fills the gap left by the hit series: Oasis. In this thriller, we follow a bunch of beautiful, filthy rich, but still quite stupid people who repeatedly make the worst choices ever. And that’s exactly why you want to see this: secretly, we all enjoy that.

The White Lotus rip-off?

The studio that previously Elite brought us, is now coming out with this thriller. It starts with a terrible act that takes place at a resort. That you think in the first five minutes that you’ve put on an old season of our favorite is understandable. Whether you’re talking about the waves of the sea you hear in the background, Spain, the surfing sessions, or filthy rich people who think they can do anything: all of that also happens in Oasis. It may sound like a bad rip-off, but it certainly isn’t. No bad telenovela with a lot of slaps and sound effects, but a good thriller full of plot twists and enough drama. Unlike its American predecessor, this series relies less on humor and social criticism, but more on cliffhangers and suspicious behavior. As a result, it feels more like a thriller that you want to see the ending of at all costs than a tropical drama.

What is Oasis about?

‘Oasis’ in this series is not a miracle in a desert, but one of the most luxurious holiday resorts in Spain. This paradise is only meant for the wealthiest families. You know, those families that aren’t superstars but are richer in a quiet luxury style than the Kardashians and the Beckhams combined. The main character in this story is Dani (Tomy Aguilera), a young, kind-hearted boy who goes on vacation with his family to this oasis. Here he meets the mysterious Celia (Victoria Kantch), who works at the hotel. But a fiery holiday romance? Dani doesn’t get that. His vacation completely changes when the girl disappears. It’s not her father, the boss of the resort, or the police, but Dani who, together with her best friend Helena (Ana Garcés), will investigate Celia’s disappearance.

Why you’ll keep watching this series until three in the morning

The fun thing about Oasis is that you truly trust no one. Everyone seems to be hiding something, causing you as a viewer to constantly switch suspects. Just when you think you know how it is, the series throws in another surprise. You don’t have to think deeply philosophically on the couch, but can just lean back while wondering who made Celia disappear. And daydreaming about such a Spanish hotel? We all want that. The resort looks like a place where you would immediately want to book a vacation. I want to stroll through a design villa, freshen up in a golden bathroom, and then take a dip in my private pool. Then have dinner with a view of the sea and drink a cocktail while the sun sets. That’s the good life that almost makes you forget that this resort isn’t actually as safe as it seems.

And let’s be honest… Such a Spanish cast with all those actors who could be models is just nice to look at. All those rich resort guests and employees are more beautiful than the other. The secrets they carry with them are just a lot uglier than you would think. Add to that white beaches, an enviable hotel, and a mystery, and you have a summer thriller that is just as enjoyable to watch as Love Island.

So: can’t wait for your vacation and are you up for a whodunit? Then Oasis is the series for you. I’m grabbing my beach towel and starting to make my mojito. It probably doesn’t taste as good as at that resort, but oh well. We can always dream. Adiós.
