everybody loves açaí
with recipe
You can buy an açaí bowl on every street corner in New York City and Instagram is full of photos of this breakfast phenomenon. The açaí berry (the main ingredient) is up there with the best of the superfoods. As I’m quite prone to jumping on the band wagon of anything that is hip in the Big Apple, I immediate dived into the kitchen for this one. What I made was quite a hearty breakfast, perfect after a sweaty workout.
What is it and what does it do?
The açaí is a berry that comes from the Brazilian Amazon and is found growing high in the açaí palm tree. They are antioxidants bombs, full of vitamin C and offer many benefits for the digestive system. Enough reason for us all to jump on this açaí band wagon.
How to make an açaí bowl?
There are so many variations of this breakfast recipe, but I’m a fan of keeping it simple. So here is my favorite.
– 2 x 100 gram bags of açaí pulp.
You can find these in the freezer section of a health food store. There is also a powder, but I find the pulp (as found in the frozen bags) to be much tastier.
– 1 banana
– juice of 2 oranges
– coconut flakes
– chopped nuts
– red fruits to top it off
– for the breakfast diehards a tablespoon of granola or muesli
First give the frozen bag of açaí a bit of bash with a small wooden spoon. This will help it to mix in more easily. Put the açaí, banana and orange juice in a blender with a little dash of water (otherwise it is too stiff). What you are aiming for is a thick substance that drips slowly from a spoon. Spoon it into a bowl and finish it off with coconut flakes, nuts and fruit choice. Or with a little granola. Are you a sweet tooth? A little agave syrup is also tasty.
