4 things you need to stop saying about food

Eating is pretty much nearly everyone’s favorite pastime. Cooking for friends, romantic dinner dates with your new love interest, going out for lunch somewhere with a glass of wine. In today’s day and age we are bombarded with the coolest food blogs, new restaurants pop up like a field of wild daisies, magazines are filled with the cutest places to have breakfast, and of course there are also a ton of articles written about the what to eat, and especially what not to eat. I can imagine it all getting on your nerves at some point. But since I’ve always had a huge interest in anything related to food and sports I no longer allow newspaper or magazine headlines, about how bad a pb&j sandwich is, effect me. I’ll run a quick 10 k regardless of whether it’s good or not.

There are a few sayings and thoughts about food that I would like to share with you, because they need to stop. Immediately. There is no point in saying or thinking them, it’s only going to make you enjoy food less and believe me: you’re overreacting, there is nothing to worry about.

“Pfff, I ate horribly today.”

Yeah, so? Did you enjoy it? Isn’t that more important? Look, if you had something disgusting to eat then I think that is a little more valuable to share. And by the way, what do you consider to be bad food anyway? Hovering down a bag of chips? Obviously doing that daily isn’t sensible, but every now and then it shouldn’t be a problem.

then why is the rest of your week ruined?

“oh no, I really can’t eat that.”

Unless you’re allergic of course, then it’s a whole other story. But if you plan on making a list for yourself with things you’re not allowed to eat, then I can guarantee you that you will fail after a day or two. As soon as you start banning things, the more you’re going to long for them. And then you’re going to start feeling guilty when you eat them. You can have everything. Try to think of it that way, it’ll be a breath of fresh air.

“Okay, okay, i’ll start again on monday.”

And then usually you don’t start until Wednesday. This one is definitely very recognizable for a lot of people. But when you think of it, it’s complete and utter BS. If you decided to eat something which is ‘bad’ for you, then why is the rest of your week ruined? And why would you have to wait until Monday to eat “healthy” again? And in the meantime you can indulge in anything and everything? Please stop using this scheme, it frustrates me, go on and enjoy those glasses of wine (or whatever else you please) and just moderate your intake. Here are a few tips to get rid of that hangover.

“Omg, i blew it.”

You never blew it. Well, you did if you’ve spent the past three weeks living like the guy in the Super Size me documentary. Then you shouldn’t be surprised if your energy levels have gone down the drain. But even then. It’s never too late to eat well and nutritious to feel good. And you definitely didn’t blow it if your calorie or sugar intake happened to be a bit more on some days rather than on others. See it as a little party. You can always run an extra lap in the park the next day if you like.

Do what makes YOU feel comfortable and try not to let others affect you. It’s easier said then done, I know, but it makes it all a lot more relaxing. You might find oatmeal to be awful, chia seeds make you feel bloated and flax seeds only have you running straight to the bathroom. The effects are different for everyone. Look, there are a few things I am very much an advocate for. I prefer using spelt pasta (or dinkel, whichever name your prefer) instead of white spaghetti and agave syrup instead of white sugar. But that doesn’t mean that I’d be a bad person if I didn’t use these products.  Anyways, I can spend hours on end discussing this but I won’t.

Look, I’m no saint either. Everything I’ve written above are things I’ve had to teach myself too. I am very conscious about what I eat but an occasional cheese platter or whipped cream pie are things I will never turn down. It’s all about balance. Do what you find comfortable and don’t ban anything. Promise?
