7X healthy food for traveling
If you are reading this, I am in the car to Paris. Liesbeth has arranged the music and I the snacks. We will definitely stop four times at a French gas station to browse a bit (hey, a store is a store) and buy a giant Toblerone bar or a baguette avec fromage et jambon, but I also brought some treats myself. I always do that when I fly. I assume that if you walk to the left, the food is much better than to the right, but I have never been served a nice plate. “Would you like pasta or chicken?” Yes okay, pasta, what kind of pasta? And I really don’t want to know what’s in the little container at the top left of the tray. Most of the time I only take the sandwich, a bit of salty butter, and the slice of cheese that is wrapped in plastic. Of course, you can easily throw a few gingerbread cookies, sultanas, and Liga bars in your bag, but it can also be a bit healthier.
Healthy food to take on your trip (and also customs-proof)
– A pack of (spelt) crackers, an avocado, and a tomato. You can easily make a little tart from that. Salt and pepper are in the little bags you get with your cutlery.
– Or spread a few sandwiches at home (crackers get soggy) and keep them in aluminum foil.
– A bag of trail mix or unsalted nuts.
– A banana, fills you up well and gives you energy.
– Boil a few eggs. They are super filling and just an egg from your hand with a bit of salt and pepper is delicious, right?
– Bring your own tea bags and just ask for boiling water. Often you can only get way too strong Earl Grey tea on airplanes. If you are traveling by car, take a large thermos with you.
– I always take a few Raw bars with me when I travel. Or make your own oatmeal bars:
Here's what you need and how to make it
- 150 grams of oats
- 100 grams of raisins
- 125 grams of raw chopped nuts
- 50 grams of seeds (flaxseed / sunflower seeds)
- 250ml almond milk
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
- Agave syrup (optional)
- Coconut flakes (optional)
1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.
2. Mix all the ingredients with your hands or in a food processor (I find that nicer)
4. Put the mixture in a baking dish lined with baking paper.
5. Bake for 40 minutes.
6. Let it cool for at least an hour and cut into bars. You can decide how big. Store them in a cookie tin or Tupperware.
