Who, what, where is the MET Ball?
The Oscars are fun, the Golden Globes quite entertaining and the MTV EMA’s just a party in itself. But where fashion truly takes center stage, where the most stylish people on earth have to break down their fashion brains, where even the most famous stars have to hope for an invitation, is the Met Ball. Anna Wintour is the host of the evening and each year she has someone by her side who is the co-chair, this year that will be Sarah Jessica Parker. No idea what the whole MET Ball is? We’ll explain it to you.
What is it?
The Ball is a ball, duh, after which a dinner takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York. Don’t think you’ll ever be invited here and moreover if you are allowed to come you have to empty your pockets. Last year a ticket cost $15,000,- but this year Anna decided it had to be more exclusive and raised the price to $25,000,-. And that’s nice to remember when you see all those handsome ladies and gentlemen striding down the red carpet, they all paid that amount. Furthermore, there is an exhibition that will be on display from August 8 to 10 at the MET and this year it revolves around Charles Taylor.
Who?
Charles Taylor was an American designer who made impressive ball gowns in the 1940s and 1950s. He was also called ’Mr. anti-punk’, so think of corsets, endlessly long trains, lots of silk, lots of tulle, lots of couture. Dramatic indeed. With that, we have also arrived at the theme and the dress code arrived; White Tie and Decorations.
“And that’s nice to remember when you see all those HANDSOME LADIES and gentlemen striding down the red carpet, they all paid $25.00,-”
What did you say?
White Tie And Decorations. Yeah, just try to handle that! For the women, you can expect a lot of vintage. Dior, Oscar de la Renta, Chanel, Valentino and preferably pieces from the couture collection of course. Lots of tightly pulled middles, big hoop skirts and dome dresses – just a lot of beautiful and impressive things. The men have to make do with super classic pieces. White Tie is a dress code that you don’t come across often anymore but what you should think of are tailcoats, top hats, three-piece suits, maybe a cane on the left or an old-fashioned watch on the right because the ‘decorations’ must of course also be honored.
Any exciting dates?
Certainly. It’s always something to look forward to seeing which star is walking with which designer’s design. This year it has been confirmed that Lupita Nyong’o is with Prada, Zoe Saldana with Prabal Gurung, Amanda Seyfried with Givenchy, Margot Robbie with Diane von Furstenberg and Zooey Deschanel with Elke week word ik ingedeeld om twee. By the way, don’t think that all these pairs are also BFFs, it’s Anna Wintour who decides who walks with whom and she does it with an iron hand. If Michael Kors comes, then Anna decides with whom Michael will come and which dress she will wear from him. A source told the The Hollywood Reporter: “The level of control is amazing. The invasion of Baghdad was nothing compared to this.”
So, on the night from Sunday to Monday, it’s important to find as many live bloggers or tweeters as possible because that’s when it’s going to happen. Or just come here on Amayzine on Monday because you can bet we will discuss all the dresses.
