5 MISTAKEN YOU MAKE WHEN CURLING YOUR HAIR
From Annie-head to the perfect beach curl
I was just sitting with Rachel in the chair to get my hair properly curled. A beachy look was born. Now I am really terrible at it myself. I used to love using the curling iron for hours. Unfortunately, I only enjoyed it for about five minutes because then it all fell out again. After 380 failed attempts, I gave up. Now I am a bit richer in hair lessons and I know that I need to prep my locks well for them to stay in place, and I also know that you should brush out curls instead of leaving them in a perfect perm. Well, there are still a few things to pay attention to, and then you can dance out the door like Shakira.
Point 1
Prep your hair. It starts with washing your hair. If you walk out of the shower with silky soft hair, that’s incredibly beautiful, but you can bet that nothing will stay in that hair of yours. It’s best to wash your hair with a salty shampoo or a prep conditioner that makes the hair a bit rougher. A good mousse and a salt spray also work well. They provide some extra grip.
Point 2
When you wrap your hair around the curling iron, things can definitely go wrong. It looks very simple, but you can end up with a total Annie hairstyle. Wrap your locks loosely around the curling iron. I once paid attention to how Rachel does it, and she holds the strand at the tip, preventing any weird twists at the end. So you don’t wrap it all the way to the tip. And she also moves the curling iron a bit, making the curl looser and more natural.
”If you’re wondering if the temperature is right for your hair, start with the strands at the nape of your neck”
Point 3
Watch the temperature. You don’t want your curl to suddenly get fried or the temperature to be so low that the curl falls out immediately. On average, 90 degrees is really quite fine to hold the strand for a few seconds. If you have very thick hair, the temperature can be a bit higher. But I really wouldn’t go above 160 degrees. If you’re wondering if the temperature is right for your hair, start with the strands at the nape of your neck. If something goes wrong, you don’t have to resort to drastic measures with the scissors.
Point 4
The direction of your curl is also important. It sounds incredibly strange, but you can create a totally different hairstyle if you curl inwards or outwards. If you want to keep it all very natural and beachy, curl your hair away from your face. The rest of your hair doesn’t really matter that much, but especially at the front, you need to pay attention. And hold the curling iron loosely in your hand and vertically. You’ll get a much prettier curl than if you wrap your locks tightly around it and hold the iron horizontally.
Point 5
Let your hair cool down and brush it out. Often people spray their whole head (think the Roy Donder way) before the curl has cooled down. No, let it cool down first, clip it in place, and take it out when your hair is back to normal temperature. This way, it will also stay in place the longest. And don’t forget to run your fingers through your hair, brush everything out, and hold your head upside down. Afraid it will fall out anyway? A bit of beach spray and hands through the hair, and it looks like you just did it.
