IN THE CATEGORY YOU JUST HAVE TO DO IT

Going out with a stranger

The wanderlusts among us must have noticed this: suddenly it’s cooler than cool to go out with a complete stranger. Lying on the beach all day is really a bit passé. Gaining world knowledge among the locals, hello, that’s going to be the new beach lounging. Through travel apps, social media, and other high-tech phone shizzle, we find our travel buddies in no time, and make our trip just a bit more adventurous. I’m a fan and that’s why I present: three ways to make traveling just a bit more social and exciting.

BlaBlaCar

I think I’m one of the few who still doesn’t know this website (because it’s been around for quite a few years), but BlaBlaCar is really the shit. Suppose you want to go to Paris with your love or have a shopping weekend in Antwerp with a friend but you don’t have a car, don’t feel like driving, hate high parking costs, or just need some company, then you quickly go with your fingers to blablacar.nl, then you type in the city you want to go to and in no time you see dozens of drivers who are also heading that way and are up for a chat. And fun, and sustainable, and cheap. For 32 euros to Paris or 13 euros to Brussels? Hello, why am I only finding out about this now?

“It’s just nice, people.”

Abel

For the Amsterdammers among us: with taxi service Abel (I’ve written about it here before) sharing is central. It’s my new addiction. Through the app, you decide where you want to be picked up and whether you want to share your ride with other passengers. The more flexible you are, the lower your ride price. I’ve shared my taxi twice now with incredibly fun chicks and we almost exchanged numbers. It’s just nice, people.

Hitchhiking

Sometimes I’m still surprised myself, but my most exciting mini-break ever was undoubtedly the weekend I went hitchhiking to Berlin with a friend. Hitchhiking really allows you to connect with your fellow humans in a fun way. And besides, it’s an experience that everyone should have. Just take someone with you, okay? Never go alone. Oh, and if you ever need a lift buddy, I’m up for an adventure again.
