SNAPCHAT, WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO US NOW?
At Amayzine, there are two camps: the Snappers and the non-Snappers. May, Joss, Jet, and I are still in camp 2. Instagram already consumes enough energy – and besides, we are a bit done with those flower crowns on those filtered baby faces, rainbow-puking unicorns, and slobbering dog tongues.
But okay, I won't play the I-hate-smurf role, I know that Snapchat is a thing nowadays. And sometimes I can't join in on the ridiculous things Kim K. does on Snap, and that's secretly a bit of a shame. Luckily, at those moments, I can just head over to the interns, the sales/marketing team, or trendy translator Elke for a little Snap injection.
“It is quite lovely to go through life on Snapchat quite spontaneously and filter-free”
And what I secretly realize on the way back to my desk: I'm starting to find it a bit more enjoyable. Because it is quite lovely to go through life on Snapchat quite spontaneously and filter-free. And especially: it feels extremely satisfying to walk a day with Gigi Hadid and other fashion week figures on Snap. And okay, okay, I was recently transformed into a cat and then you've got me.
BUT NOW IT COMES.
Snapchat announced an update yesterday that will completely undermine the whole principle of the app. The ‘Memories’ feature is being added, allowing you to download, edit, and RE-PUBLISH your snaps. You can even upload photos and videos from your media roll (!) to Snapchat. You can fake last year's vacations again if you want.
“Now I have no choice but to stick around in camp 2”
Dear people of Snapchat, wasn't that your whole unique selling point? On Instagram, half of my timeline is fooling around with their semi ‘spontaneous’ moments, but you were supposed to be the truth? The here and now, and therefore a lot more personal than many other platforms? I was really almost convinced, huh…
Now I have no choice but to stick around in camp 2. Where I am also having a great time and we dance with real flower crowns and lick tongues when necessary. Now you again.
