THE BRITISH SAY ‘SEE EU LATER’; WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES FOR US?
Europe is panicking after 52 percent of the British voted for a ‘Brexit’ There is nothing more to be done: England is leaving the EU. What does that mean for us? Ha, a lot of discounts on clothing in any case.
1. Shopping becomes super cheap
Yes. You heard it right. This morning the pound took a huge hit against the dollar. The pound fell below 1.35 dollars around 5 AM - the lowest number ever since 1985. Do you hear what I hear? SHOPPING. IS. VERY. ADVANTAGEOUS. NOW. I can't think clearly anymore, I'm already booking a ticket to London, yay!
2. Apply for that passport
Just coming back to point 1: if you want to shop, you need to apply for that passport as soon as possible. Because if you only have an ID card, you won't be able to go to England anymore. Ever thought about that?
3. Dutch people can no longer easily work in England
Serving in a coffee shop in London? It’s going to be a lot harder than before. Brexit also means stricter rules for us in England. Working there is almost impossible without living there or having a work permit.
4. Fewer Brits on city trips in Amsterdam
Because Europe is becoming more expensive for the Brits because of this joke. Which the Amsterdammers among us probably won't lose sleep over. Wait a minute, NOT losing sleep over: fewer drunken British hooligans under your window at night and fewer of those silly beer bikes.
5. Rutte has lost his buddy/trade partner/allied
Mark Rutte and David Cameron were reportedly good friends and allies. But Cameron (who was against Brexit) stepped down as Prime Minister of Great Britain this morning. It remains to be seen whether a new ‘buddy’ will rise for Rutte. This could also mean something for the Dutch economy.
Well England, you have left us. It remains a politically sensitive issue. But I do know: if you diss us, we will buy those Victoria Beckham bags and Stella McCartney shoes for a pittance. That will teach you.
