8 things you need to know about the sun
Oh yes, people. The weather is nice. It's going to be nice weather. Summer has finally begun and I am quite happy about it. Delightful to push your nose in the sun all day and then come back after the weekend as if you made a quick visit to Ibiza. It can happen. But with some caveats about the sun, because it is of course not always good for you. 8 things you need to know according to Jetske Ultee before you crawl into the shade like a red tomato because the baking has gone a bit too hard. Jetske debunks the myths and takes us into the world of safe sunbathing.
1. We can be in the sun
“Of course everyone can sit in the sun. But do so protected. Sun rays are really harmful to the skin. But also skin aging such as wrinkles, pigmentation, and sagging are caused by sun damage.”
2. The sun makes you happy
“The sun is very good for the vitamin D supply. So that's great. But that doesn't outweigh the harmful effects of the sun. Therefore, always enjoy protected.”
3. Frequent application is key
“Reapplying every two hours is important to keep the factor really effective. That's not a myth. After application, the effectiveness of the filters decreases and you are therefore less protected. Unfortunately, it is really a myth that a sunscreen would be suitable for the whole day.”
4. The shelf life of sunscreen
“Sunscreen does not last a lifetime. Especially with certain chemical filters, the effectiveness decreases significantly after 12 months, and therefore I also recommend buying a new sunscreen every year. There should always be an open pot symbol on the packaging indicating that a product is shelf-stable for at least 30 months when closed. If the product has been opened, the number of months on the open pot indicates how long it remains good after opening.”
5. Using a tanning bed as preparation
“Don't do it. Tanning bed tanning hardly protects against burning. Moreover, the radiation you receive from using a tanning bed mainly consists of UVA radiation. This radiation penetrates deeper into the skin than UVB and damages the DNA, accelerating the skin aging process.”
6. Which factor should we choose?
”What many people may not know is that no filter protects 100%, not even SPF 50. If you apply sunscreen properly and according to the rules, a product with factor 15 protects against 93% of the sun's rays and a product with factor 30 protects against 97%. A factor 50 only protects 1 to 2% more. Unless you have an extremely fair skin, factor 15 or 30 is sufficient. If you are not a regular applier and have (quickly) issues with pigmentation spots? Then choose a factor 30.”
7. Seek the shade
“Without sun, no wrinkles. Since 90% of wrinkles are caused by the sun, your best anti-wrinkle cream is sunscreen. And remember that the height of the factor is not the most important, but the way you apply it. So apply often enough and use at least half a dessert spoon of sunscreen for your face.”
8. Eat beautifully
“You can protect yourself from the sun by also paying attention to your food. Tomatoes, carrots, red beets and broccoli can limit UV damage. You do need a substantial amount, so you know what to order when you're sitting on a terrace in the sun. Better safe than sorry!”
