THE WAYS TO GET THROUGH THE BANG GROWTH PROCESS

Max Mara, Alexa Chung and Marni do it too

After two years bang on, bang off I can now call myself a sort of expert. I have endured everything: from the crooked bang, the one-millimeter-too-short cut to the one-bite-out-of-your-bang. I have also experienced the moments when I thought that a bang in the summer was not very handy and when I wanted to get rid of my bang, but that was not possible because it had a disastrous length. And then an email from Sarah popped up in my inbox. I really think it's great that my beauty expertise is being used, because she had the question of how on earth she can grow her bang. In a stylish way, of course.

Well, Sarah. Two things. One: it’s going to be hell. You have to get through it. I can’t tell you otherwise. Eat some extra vitamin B (that makes your hair grow), stop smoking (because then your hair keeps getting oxygen), eat a lot of protein (nuts, meat, and fish, because that also makes your hair grow) and get some extra sun hours. Two: the interim hell (the moment between bang and grown-out locks) can be solved. On the catwalk, you see a lot of cool looks to work that bang away, so you can definitely do it too. Good luck, lady! And other reading audience that has exactly the same problem.

The curtain fringe

Do you have a perfectly straight bang? Let it grow a little and have it cut into a curtain. Sounds silly, but it’s so incredibly Alexa Chung. I’ve done it myself and you don’t immediately have an intense transition from a full bang to a bald forehead.

Braiding

Tight braids are totally in. It may look like you just walked out of the boxing ring, but with a bang that is growing out, those tight braids are super handy. Now you might think: impossible with all those tiny strands. Myth. Wet your hair beforehand, braid it tightly, and let hairspray fix it a bit.

Twist it

At Marni, Max Mara, and Chandran, this was the way all models walked the catwalk. Their hair was totally twisted back. Very cool. It doesn’t have to be so tight, so a little beauty mistake can slip in. Use some salt spray, blow-dry it a bit voluminous (including your bang) and then work it back with bobby pins. Just make sure it’s all nice and stiff, because otherwise, it will still bounce all over the place.

Accessory

You are used to having the attention on your hairstyle. That bang definitely draws some eyes your way. So focus elsewhere, so you don’t see that your bang is just a centimeter too long or just a millimeter too short. A hair accessory works as a very nice solution. And if you choose those gold glittering examples like Dolce & Gabbana, you can be sure that the attention shifts to another point.

The quiff

Sounds very eighties, but no, a quiff is so very now. Quite a bit of volumizing powder, a lot of salt spray, and a blow dryer that lifts everything up are the essentials you need. Okay, and a spritz of hairspray. This look is perfect if you are just starting the growth process. If you’ve been at it for a while, it might be that everything totally collapses afterward.

Wet look

The wet look seems the easiest, but it’s the hardest. You have to make sure it doesn’t look dirty. A dab of gel takes you back to the ‘90s (or actually just to now) and you comb the bang away hopsaflops.
