Thank god it’s summer

Elke Wijnands

Summer, when does it start for you?

‘Actually, from the moment I can finally bring peonies into the house, even if it's raining outside. For me, these are always the kick-off for summer. And of course, also a bit when I can swap all my long pants and jackets for dresses, shorts, and short sleeves.’

And what’s going to happen this summer? Vacation?

‘Not much, to be honest. In July, I surprised my mother with a long weekend in Paris to celebrate her birthday, and I'm thinking about maybe looking for the sun later in the year (October or maybe November) with friends in California. Oh yes, and in two weeks, I'm flying with May to the Big Apple. It's for work, but secretly also fun to hop around New York in the last days of summer.’

What does your ideal vacation day look like?

‘As spontaneous as possible. I always have the idea that if I know it's going to be nice weather and I plan my entire day with a list of things I want to do, the day is already a lot less fun. Together with one of my besties I often have ‘Spontaneous Saturdays’ in the summer, and we just meet at one place, and by the end of the day (read: in the early morning hours) we've done quite a few terraces. Hangover included.’

What’s your summer drink?

‘I never say no to a lovely glass (or several) of white wine. And also not to gin and tonic. And something with bubbles and fruit in it.’

And your favorite meal on a warm day?

‘Pear ice pops. Although this is not a meal, but rather something refreshing. And definitely something I can't seem to keep to just one. But oysters are always good too. But they actually do well for me all year round…’

What is your way too expensive summer must-have?

‘Oh dear, I find this difficult. There is so much that makes me happy in the summer and that isn't necessarily expensive, but all together it does make quite a dent in my wallet. Current crush? All the dresses from Realisation Par. Wanttttt.’
