TOO THICK, TOO THIN, TOO LONG, TOO SHORT AND SO ON…
Why we always have something to complain about
Our queen of sales Danielle looks at the hair of shopping editor Lilian. “I want your hair. Seems amazing.” Lil to Daan: “No man, I want YOUR hair! So nicely thick!” “No,” says Daan. “Trust me, you don’t want this. This hair is a drama.” We are having lunch at Amayzine and it’s time for the complaining quarter. A.k.a.: the compliment quarter for your neighbor, because she probably has all sorts of things you would also like to have.
And then the floodgates opened.
One suddenly shouts that she wants longer legs, another has those long Bambi legs and wouldn’t mind being a bit less ‘present’. The girls with the small breasts find large breasts sexy, and the cup C+ girls feel they can ‘barely wear cute dresses’ and wouldn’t mind giving back some breast to Mother Nature. I immediately shout that if we are going to give things back to Mother Nature, I also have a portion of thigh + butt in the offer.
‘The thing is: we always have something to complain about’
But really ALWAYS. If we have freckles, we don’t want freckles. Or does the neighbor have prettier freckles. I recently spoke to a big blogger with almost 60 thousand followers on Instagram, she is really upset that there are ‘unfortunately not yet a hundred’. Why are we never satisfied? Why do we always look over the fence at the neighbors? Why don’t we actually embrace what we have ourselves? Is it a woman thing? Is it age-related? The quarter-life crisis? Will this critical self-criticism ever go away or are we doomed with insecurities and the I-want-what-she-has gene?
Maybe it’s time to stop that eternal comparing. To put things into perspective. No one is the best, funniest, or prettiest and no, neither are you. What you are is unique. And hello, be happy with the differences between people. One sings à la Beyoncé, the other is sporty and has size 34, and the other has angel hair so shiny, wavy, and long that she does NOTHING for it every morning. Welcome to life. You might be jealous of a friend with a partner so sweet and nice that it almost drives you crazy, while that friend envies your successful career. And just think: if everyone were the same, then the world would be a boring place, man. Then everyone would aspire to the same thing, everyone would be attracted to the same people AND you wouldn’t be unique. Think about that the next time you complain about your hair? Keep it up!
