6 rare dingen die je hoofd doet

We are not robots. And things are not as they are. It always depends on how it is presented and by whom and how you feel at that moment. My classic example is the one of two groups of people sitting in a room with an overwhelming amount of noise. One group of people can press a button when it becomes too much for them; then the noise stops. The other group does not have that button. You understand: the group with the button can handle much, much more noise than the other. This indicates that you can make people better part of a situation, take them along in the how and why, and make them co-responsible. Anyway. I found some nice scientific studies in the depths of the internet that are too fun not to share with you.

1. If you in love are, everything tastes better

Even tap water, according to research by a professor from the University of Nijmegen. The sweet-love association probably comes from our baby time when we linked the love for our mother to breast milk.

2. Something that is important feels heavier

A group of respondents was given a book. If it was mentioned that there was very important information in the book, it was literally experienced as a heavier book than when you said it was about a light trivial matter.

3. If you are vulnerable, things feel heavier

If you are on the verge of being overstressed, the smallest thing that you would otherwise not turn your hand for can suddenly become an insurmountable obstacle. “Then I also have to organize that children's party boohoo.” I still hear myself saying that while I would otherwise laugh it off. Fortunately, we have science on our side. If you feel vulnerable, you literally experience things as heavier than when you are in your strength. A box of three kilos can be unliftable one month and a piece of cake a month later.

4. If you are lonely, you feel cold

Scientists asked their respondents to remember a moment when they felt lonely or excluded. They were then asked to estimate the room temperature. They estimated it to be 1 to 2 degrees lower than it actually was.

5. With a warm drink, you are milder

When people were asked to judge strangers, they were milder in their judgment when they held a warm drink in their hands.

6. Black and white makes you literally black and white

A matter was presented on white paper with a tight black border around it to a research group. People from that group judged the matter much more black and white than another target group where the same issue was framed with multiple colors. Those people were much more inclined to see the other side of the matter.
