8 DUTCH VILLAGES YOU WANT TO HAVE BEEN TO
Now you know that I am a big advocate of packing suitcases and let's go for it (the further, the better), but shall we also keep it within the Dutch borders for a moment? About small villages and towns that are incredibly worth it and instagrammable? I think that's a great plan. Here they come:
1. Giethoorn, Overijssel
Also known as the Venice of Holland. And if you're there, of course, you go boating, duh. By the way, did you know that the Chinese are crazy about Giethoorn?
2. Oene, Gelderland
Okay okay, I had NEVER heard of this village until seven years ago, but if your boy comes from here, then the cookie naturally crumbles differently. Oene has about 1600 inhabitants and I tell you: for the best steak in the country, you have to be here. At butcher Ter Weele to be precise. Oh and, do read this Farmers' Dictionary for Dummies before you head that way.
3. Willemstad, Noord-Brabant
Who? What? Curaçao? No. Also in Holland, we have our own Willemstad. Named after William of Orange, and the small port city (just an exception) is perfect for a day of being a tourist in your own country.
“Limburg is tha place to be.”
4. Loenen aan de Vecht, Utrecht
First of all, I already think the name is beautiful. And no, I'm not saying that because it's in my hometown. The village is surrounded by various lakes and rivers, and picnicking in the spring is just the best.
5. Thorn, Limburg
Also known as the ‘white town’, because of all the white houses. Looking for a good light spot to instagram? Limburg is tha place to be.
6. Naarden, Noord-Holland
Okay, I am a bit biased because I worked here for a while. But the star-shaped fortified town of Naarden is not only cool from above, it is bursting with history and you can enjoy a nice walk there.
7. Rasquert, Groningen
For some reason, I think of cheese (roquefort), but in the far north, near Pieterburen, lies a small village named Rasquert. 180 people live there, there is an ice rink, it looks cute, I want to go there.
8. Urk, Flevoland
According to many, the most beautiful village in Flevoland. And yes, that is still on the agenda, a visit to Urk. A bit of eating fish, going to the lighthouse, the beach... Oh and, in Urk couples are said to stay together the longest.. I can see it happening, Sander. When are we going?
