The coolest cinemas you want to go to now
Because I believe in going to the movies on Monday – call it a religion – a nice list of cinemas where you want to sink into a chair tonight. Just count along, Monday night is not for world domination or ending up tipsy in a dodgy pub, but it does feel nice and proactive when you do something fun with your life. In a cinema, you don't have to do too much, so getting tired is not an option, but you end up in bed at a decent hour. So Monday, plus nice addresses. And not of the genre where your popcorn bucket doesn't fit in the holder, but the cinemas where it's just a bit different. Through 4D (okay okay, it does nothing for your popcorn and that holder) or to a cinema with the best service ever (that it does).
Soho House
By far the coolest in the country. We don't call it a cinema, but a cinema. In a luxury seat, you enjoy a blockbuster or some arthouse. Located in the Soho House in Amsterdam.
The Movies
Small, cozy, and nice. A quick bite beforehand, without missing your movie because: that's what you do in the cinema. You can find The Movies on Haarlemmerstraat.
CineLounge
At your service, in the best service cinema in the country. Head to Houten, press the button, and the food and beverages come your way. I love this concept.
De Filmhallen
Adjacent to the Foodhallen and if anything is a decent combo, it's film and food. De Filmhallen is located in an old tram depot and looks nothing like the black box where we are often crammed in. Art deco, with velvet-covered chairs, just how we like to see the classic, chic cinema.
Filmtheater ’t Hoogt
Not your ordinary night out at the cinema. At ’t Hoogt, you see films and documentaries that matter, sometimes you chat afterwards in the café, all in a historic building in the center of Utrecht.
Kinepolis Utrecht
We're still in the Dom city, I suspect there are residents who put their Utrecht stamp on this list. But you have to go to Kinepolis, there you book a cozy seat, which, as you might have guessed, feels just as cozy as the name suggests. With foldable armrests, extra legroom, coat hooks, storage space for your luggage; everything. A ride with the business is nothing compared to this.
Four-D
Buckle up, your seat rolls, spins, tilts, bucks, vibrates, and dances. You sit in rain, wind, hot air, snow, and lightning. Go for the full experience and catch a 4DX movie at Pathé De Kuip or Pathé De Munt.
FC Hyena
It's not a football team, no, it's a cinema where you eat what you see and see what you eat. Check when the next food-and-film edition is on the agenda.
Up on the roof
I would wait another year myself, but then you want to catch a rooftop movie at Floor17. It's exactly what you think it is: an open-air cinema on a roof somewhere in Amsterdam.
And if you go, take a look at our suggestions for a movie.
