These are the vegetarian hotspots of Amsterdam

The number of vegetarians in my circle of friends is increasing week by week. Now I also eat vegetarian several days a week, but I can appreciate a delicious piece of fish or meat from time to time. And it has to be very responsibly sourced from the fishmonger or the ecological butcher, because I have seen all the documentaries about the bio-industry and they don't make you happy. Cooking extensively vegetarian or vegan at home for friends is still a challenge for me, but I have now enlisted the help of the cookbooks by Ottolenghi and the app from Deliciously Ella. And fortunately, there are more and more places in Amsterdam where you can eat excellently vegetarian, for those moments when you don't feel like slaving away in the kitchen for hours.

  1. Meatless District: for the best vegetarian croquettes, you need to be here in West. Actually, everything on the menu is delicious and you can drop by at any time of the day for a tasty vegetarian or vegan dish. And to top it all off, you can enjoy a glass of vegan wine with it.
  2. Beter & Leuk: from fresh juices and salads to vegetarian sandwiches; this breakfast/lunch spot is a must-visit if you're in the East. And don't forget to try one of the delicious vegan and healthy desserts.
  3. The Advocado Show: the name says exactly what you can expect: a show of very Instagram-worthy avocado dishes in the heart of Pijp, but since this week there is more avocado joy. On Willemsparkweg, there is a brand new branch where you can not only sit down but also take away or have it delivered.
  4. Restaurant Adam: on Overtoom is the best-kept vegetarian spot in Amsterdam. Here you could already enjoy a delicious multi-course dinner, where one or more courses were vegetarian. Due to all the positive feedback, they decided to develop a fully vegetarian menu, for which even the most fervent fish and meat eaters would gladly go vegetarian for an evening.
  5. Yerba: seasonal vegetables, edible plants, all sourced from local suppliers. I saw one of the beautiful dishes on Instagram and immediately wanted to reserve a table to taste the menu myself. This place near the Museumplein is an absolute recommendation: not only for the vegetarians and vegans among us, but also for the omnivores.
  6. Vegan Junk Food Bar: for those who only see a plate of boring and healthy vegetables when it comes to vegetarian food, this is a golden tip, because here you can go all out with burgers, shawarma, bitterballen, and all of it completely vegan. They are absolutely on par with the meat variants and you feel a lot less unhealthy afterwards. And the truffle fries with Parm á San are worth a special mention.
