Why being a young mother is suddenly a thing

Everywhere I look, I see babies. Especially on Instagram. Everyone is pregnant, wants to be pregnant, or has just given birth. Former classmates, colleagues, Insta-celebrities, your twenty-two-year-old neighbor... I mean: that's an accident, right? No, it's not. These decisions are made with full awareness. Becoming a mother after your thirties is suddenly so 2017; if you want to be a bit Monica Geuze-ish then you think about children in your twenties. Twenty is the new thirty.

I uh, think thirty is fine, the old thirty, and I'm still waiting to think about dirty diapers and pacifiers, but I must say: I also understand the women who want to become young mothers. Time for a lesson in reframing. This morning I choose team dirty diaper. Because wow, being a young mother also means...

...still being in the prime of your life when your little one leaves the nest later on

Imagine, you get pregnant at twenty-two, then you could be sitting at home with an empty nest by forty. Time to throw yourself into your career if that's your dream. To take that world trip. To chill fully.

...hip grandparents

Being a young mother often means parents who are still very much in the midst of life. Super active, fit enough to babysit.

...that you get your old figure back faster

Not that you should base such a big life choice on that, but gosh, it is nice.

...less chance of a miscarriage

Information that my best friend (25, just gave birth) hit me with. Apparently, women are most fertile in their twenties and the chance of birth defects is then the lowest.

...milf material

Yeah sorry, put bluntly, but it's true.

...have a lot of energy

And therefore be able to handle the broken nights well.

...still somewhat understand your child when they start to hit puberty

Because you are young and closer to their world of experience, which allows you to better deal with their behavior.

...learn to know yourself faster

I hear it everywhere around me: motherhood is the greatest school there is. You get to know yourself and discover talents you didn't know you had. No study can compare to that.

To immediately continue with this: this is what no one tells you about being pregnant and giving birth.
