Celebrating Christmas with the in-laws 2.0 with the series Merry Happy Whatever

Celebrating Christmas with your in-laws… It remains a bit of a thing for many. Especially the first time, of course. Even if you know your in-laws well, actually celebrating Christmas with them is quite Meet The Parents 2.0. The different traditions that families have at Christmas, the family compositions; it is in itself a brilliant formula for a comedy. And yes, that is exactly what Netflix is coming up with at the end of November.

On November 28, Happy Merry Whatever will be released online, with the first season counting eight episodes. I don't know if you remember the Meet The Parents movies from back in the day, but it immediately made me think of that. Matt is going to meet his in-laws for the very first time, at Christmas. He really wants to make a good first impression, because he plans to propose to his girlfriend Emmy. But yes, if you want to do that the traditional American way, you naturally ask her father for her hand… So, he needs to win over that father a bit. It seems a lot harder than expected.

Because his in-laws – and especially that father – are a bit quirky. A kind of cult, the other sister-in-law and brother-in-law call it. In fact, they have set up a kind of support group on how to deal with this crazy family (they're called the Quinns, by the way). I found that very funny, and secretly wondered how often that would actually happen in real life. There’s a reason that comedy films and series about this always tend to do quite well.

Because I think this one will also be a nice hit. Anyway, it was definitely time for a fun comedy series. After Sex Education (which I would love to see back very soon, yes thank you) and Insatiable, I’m ready for something funny again. Okay, one point of criticism for Merry Happy Whatever: judging by the trailer, they do seem to be working with a laugh track in the background. Can that go, Netflix? Then I would be really looking forward to it. A Merry Happy Whatever from me in advance.
