Soon create your own playlist on Netflix? That's going to be binge-watching

As nice as Netflix is, they occasionally ask one question that I find particularly painful. Correction, I think everyone finds it particularly painful. And confronting. I'm of course talking about the are-you-still-watching question. Yes, Netflix. I am still watching. Yes, Netflix, I could indeed have stopped at one episode. No, Netflix, I indeed did not do that, because you see it right: I am now on episode eight. Thanks for the reminder. That question always sounds a bit like a throwback to when I was six and my parents pointed out something I was doing wrong in a know-it-all tone (at least I thought so then). Lecturing. Go-do-something-with-your-life-like. Well, good news: I think we will hear that question a lot more often when this new update from Netflix comes through.

They are currently working on Netflix Collections, the first tests of which are now available on iOS devices. These Collections are somewhat comparable to Spotify playlists, because that’s what they are: playlists. We know the layout of Netflix, of course, and those are still categories for now. Just a side note about that: do you also find those names a bit bizarre sometimes? ‘American drama series with a strong female lead.’ Who comes up with those categories? But anyway, the chance is very present that we will soon get a new scrolling option.

The playlists are, unlike the categories, compiled by Netflix employees (that seems like a fun job to me). Lists like ‘Let’s keep it light’ and ‘Find a docuseries’ have already been created and can be found in the testing phase. The emphasis is still really on the testing phase for now, because it is not at all certain that this will become a definitive new feature. But I hope so.

Because then it’s just a matter of time before you can follow each other and watch each other’s playlists, right? I am already making all my imaginary lists. ‘Movies that just belong to your upbringing’, ‘Dis-ney normally more’, ‘Contentless movies with a handsome male lead’, ‘No, you don’t have to sleep anymore tonight’. Who's going to follow me? All of you, right?
