Why you especially shouldn't exercise in January

Of course we want to start the new year fit, if possible. But exercising is not a good plan.
Well, not in January. That's due to the crowds in the gyms. You're not the only one dreaming of a smaller size, and that's why it's packed and you have to fight for a spot on the treadmill. You don't want that. In fact: it demotivates, according to psychologists. They suggest that it's better to either start exercising in December or wait until February to get started.
Especially when you feel that it doesn't have to start right away, from January 1st, from the second that the new year begins, you'll last longer. Research shows that people typically stop most of their New Year's resolutions by January 12th. Only 8 percent of people manage to keep a resolution for a whole year. But we are willing to invest a lot in it. On average, we are willing to spend 530 euros to make our resolutions come true. It's a shame if you can't stick to it. What to do?
The trick with New Year's resolutions, according to scientists, is to gradually mix it into your life. Not going from forever on the couch to hanging weights eight times a week. You can only keep that up for a maximum of three weeks, and then you'll come back to that couch with your tail between your legs. It's better to make small adjustments in your life. And then you build on that. For example: take the stairs at work instead of the elevator or ride a bike instead of driving. And if you can keep that up, then you can go for an extra bike ride. Is biking too big a step? Park your car a bit further away so you have to walk a nice long distance. That idea. Small things help a lot. What also helps? Having a concrete goal, not being vague with: ‘exercise more’. Instead, say: I won't sit still for half an hour every day.
Alright then, I'll just skip that gym subscription because, come on: I'm not going anyway. Self-knowledge, after 30 years. And it saves me 530 euros. But I will bike. Walk more with my two little big boys. Do a squat while the boys take a nap. And eat salad. And cold-pressed vegetable juice. No wine. But I'm starting in February, okay? January doesn't count.
