With these 10 series and movies, you'll never sleep a wink again

Next Saturday is Halloween and besides the fact that we do absolutely nothing about it in the Netherlands, we also can't go anywhere. So it's actually a great opportunity to do something about it: give ourselves sleepless nights by watching the scariest series and movies. There's no better excuse to do that with Halloween during corona. The world is already a nightmare at the moment, so much worse it can't be, right?
Wrong. These movies and series have been watched by yours truly and I can tell you: I can handle quite a bit. But not these. I couldn't handle them. But that means that these are your ultimate bucket list as a true horror/thriller lover. And, if you have any tips: please.
1. The Shining
Scariest. Movie. EVER. And the proof that a terrifying movie doesn't need a lot of violence or blood and that they knew damn well how to make a movie like this back in the day, it dates from 1980. I think it's such a cool movie but at the same time so scary. I've watched it many times, but I've stopped even more often after two minutes. As soon as you see that car driving through the mountains, I turn it off. I already get the creeps. Really a must-see for enthusiasts.
2. The Haunting of Hill House
Yes, sorry, as happy as I am with the sequel The Haunting of Bly Manor, it doesn't compare to the first season. Of course, the absence of Michiel Huisman is a big loss, but this first part is much, much scarier. Sleepless nights guaranteed.
3. Hereditary
This is a bit of the surprise in terms of horror movies. Suddenly it was available on Netflix and suddenly everyone was talking about how it was really a must-see for horror lovers. Well, then I naturally felt called and boarded the OMG-Hereditary-is-really-very-cool ship.
4. Black Mirror
One of my favorite series of all time. So bizarre, because with every episode you think: this could really happen. By the way, all of 2020 is just a Black Mirror episode. But there are such sick episodes that I really lay awake all night thinking about them. My recommendations: Shut Up and Dance, The Entire History of You, White Bear, White Christmas, and The National Anthem. If you still can't see it after that, watch San Junipero and/or Hang The DJ.
5. The Babadook
Yes, I know: how can a movie with this name be scary? I thought so too, but I was completely wrong. I find movies with children who are possessed, or who see ghosts, or just children in general, quite scary. And this one is definitely the ultimate top in that regard.
6. Dark
Normally, I don't really like movies or series that are not in Dutch or English. Really very superficial, I know, but then I always have to focus so much that I quickly lose interest. But not with this series. So addictive and exciting. Yes, it's in German but really: watch it.
7. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
This one definitely has to be on the list. Horror at its finest. So over the top bizarre, disgusting, and yet very thrilling. Maybe a bit of nostalgia, because the first time I saw this, I seriously didn't sleep. That Leatherface is quite a sight, and then that sound of the chainsaw... And also locked in a slaughterhouse. This one is just so cool.
8. Caliphate
This may not quite fit in the horror category, but I really think this is the best series of the year so I don't miss any chance to recommend it to anyone who wants to hear it. And I have seriously slept a bit less because it's so well made and the events are so intense. And just thinking: this could really all happen.
9. Session 9
I first saw it when I was about thirteen and I don't think I even finished it then. There's a scene with an eye and just like I have a phobia of scary children, I have that with disturbing things related to eyes. Yuck, and it was so explicitly shown, I still get chills from it. And besides, it's just very thrilling by the way.
10. A Serbian Film
The only one on the list that I haven't seen and also don't want to see and above all don't dare to see. Everywhere on the internet, this is listed as the scariest, sickest movie and that you are really scarred for life and that people genuinely have issues with it later. So I would seriously not recommend this, but if you really have a sick mind... Well, it does belong in this list. You'll get sleepless years from it.
