Calling your mother is good for your health

Has it been a while since you spoke to your own mother? Shame on you. Grab that phone and call her right away.
And no, texting doesn't count.
Small effort
Because research shows that calling your mother is very good for your health. For example, it can reduce your stress. The cuddle hormone oxytocin peaks during a nice phone call, just as strongly as during an in-person meeting. So that saves you a visit to your mother. Small effort, brings you a lot.
It has been proven in a study. The researchers had young girls solve math problems for fifteen minutes under supervision to simulate a stressful situation. Then, part of the group was instructed to call their mother, another part had real face-to-face contact for fifteen minutes, some girls were only allowed to text, and the last group had no contact at all. And you guessed it: those who called their mother and those who saw their mother had the least stress. They also felt the happiest due to the cuddle hormone. Your mother texting or messaging doesn't have that effect.
Hi mom
‘It was always assumed that physical contact was necessary for the production of oxytocin in social bonding,’ says biological anthropologist Leslie Seltzer. ‘But the research clearly shows that your mother's voice can have the same effect as a hug.’ You just want to hear her familiar voice for a moment. To share your story. To complain, sigh, and move on. Then you just feel good again. That's exactly what you need your mother for. Isn't it nice that we have her?
