Everything about the MET Gala 2021

It is still a bit the most exclusive event of the year. Perhaps after the Oscars. But they absolutely pale in comparison to the MET Gala when it comes to fashion. In fact, I realized this morning that I actually have no idea what the MET Gala entails. Is there a dinner, an exhibition, a party? Do they get something to drink there too? I only ever see photos of the red carpet and that’s it. This year, Rihanna was also back at the Carlyle Hotel in no time. Maybe we can ask our own NikkieTutorials, because yes: she had an invitation and was shining on the red carpet. Just like Addison Rae, by the way, because this was the first year that a TikToker made her appearance.

That received a lot of criticism, because Anna Wintour was known for being very selective with her invitations. But well, no one ever expected that Kim Kardashian would be allowed to go to the MET Gala and she has been a welcome guest for quite a few years now. By the way, not this year: she was there, but no one really saw her. Whut? Yes, I really have no idea what was going on with her outfit or what the idea behind it was, or what it actually was at all. So. Many. Questions. Let’s go through the outfits.

The theme was In America: A Lexicon Of Fashion, or modestatements that all have something to do with America. That turned out to be quite a challenge for some.

But not for Billie Eilish, who — I think — looked stunning in a dress that was clearly a tribute to Marilyn Monroe.

And then. The Kim Kardashian, who has really stolen the show on the carpet at the MET Gala in recent years. With, what people first thought, Kanye by her side. That turned out not to be the case: it’s the creative director of Balenciaga. But what’s going on with this outfit… I really have no idea. What’s happening here? This can’t possibly come from anyone other than Kanye, right? She literally had to be led over the red carpet because she could hardly see anything. Is Kim okay?

And the award for best photo of the evening goes to… Kendall Jenner and her shadow. Oh no, that’s Kim. HAHA. Sorry, but this can’t be?! She’s only going to regret this, right? Of course, there’s a lot of talk (not much positive feedback) and speculation about why she wore this. There’s also quite a bit of criticism online that the timing for such a strange outfit is a bit poor, as women are currently being forced to cover themselves in Afghanistan, against their will. Additionally, people are sure that this must come from Kanye, and that it’s a hint that they are back together. Kanye’s profile picture on Insta has also become a black square, and he only follows people who have that as their profile picture. Kim has done it too, but he doesn’t follow her anymore. Hmmm.

Notably, this year it was mandatory to be vaccinated, otherwise you were not welcome at the MET Gala. That’s why, for example, Nicki Minaj wasn’t there last minute (just read the ‘statement’ below), but also Anwar Hadid and Dua Lipa would be among the absentees for that reason. Kylie Jenner decided to drop out last minute and that naturally leads to speculation. Is she unvaccinated, or maybe a last-minute fight with Travis Scott — who was present?
