Women are massively removing their own IUDs: how dangerous is that?

Sometimes there are those online trends that make you think: NO. This is one of them. Women are massively removing their own IUDs and sharing it on TikTok.
Yes, really. Gloves on and just fiddling down there.
Too expensive
The first person to remove her IUD by herself and capture it on camera is Mikkie Gallagher. The American shows in the video how she removed her IUD in under two minutes and that you ‘don't actually need to go to a doctor for that’. Okay. Since her video, many have followed suit. Hand in, feel for that string, and hop, pull the IUD out. Just teeth together and you're done.
Mikkie thinks it's a good idea: ‘Yes! They are designed to be easily removed, so it should be fine. It's mainly the fear of what could potentially happen.’ The hashtag #iudremoval has now garnered 68 million views on TikTok. Why have millions of women followed her idea and put their hand in their own vagina That's because the costs in America are high for a visit like this to the doctor. In the Netherlands, removing an IUD is free, while in the US it costs women about 200 euros. And not everyone is willing to pay that.

But isn't it extremely dangerous? Yes. Doctors strongly advise against it: it can lead to bleeding, a lot of pain, or even a uterine prolapse. ‘Without the proper tools that doctors have at their disposal, it can also be very difficult to locate the IUD properly. It is really deep and attached to your uterus,’ says a doctor. Not exactly recommended. And certainly not in the Netherlands, because thank god we can just go to the doctor for free for these kinds of things.
