Why everyone is talking about Ted Lasso

A good comedy series is something to cherish. There are — in my opinion — simply too few of them in recent years. It’s no coincidence that we still massively rewatch Friends or How I Met Your Mother. I’d rather hear Ross scream for the eighth time that they were really ‘on a break’ than give another new series a chance that will ultimately disappoint. Because that’s often the case for me: new comedy series are often just not funny at all.
Because my expectations were so low, I initially didn’t listen to the people who proclaimed that Ted Lasso was amazing. Okay, and another reason: I hadn’t done any research and thought it would be a bad western or something. Yep, just because of that ‘Lasso’ in the title, pretty simple-minded of me. And what a shame, because I would have liked to know about this series much earlier. Because it’s FUN.
The lead role in Ted Lasso is played by Jason Sudeikis, who portrays an American football coach who relocates to England. His goal: to lead a soccer team there. He has absolutely no soccer experience and the players themselves are not very positive either. It’s a delightful combination of Jason Sudeikis’ charm (yes, I like him) and the wonderfully dry British humor. You can imagine a positive surprise when you have to laugh out loud at a series you initially thought would be about cowboys.
Ted Lasso is available on Apple TV and believe me: you have to give it a chance. It’s been a long time since I really laughed out loud in front of the TV. I was literally cracking up all by myself. Not convinced yet? Maybe the impressive twenty Emmy nominations will sway you. And good news if you haven’t started yet: you have two seasons to watch. Delightful.
