Experts say: ‘alcohol is the secret to a good marriage’

Forget everything you have learned about marriage. Sure, it takes hard work to make it succeed, but apparently it's more a matter of drinking hard, because according to research, that would be the key to a happy marriage. This research was published by The Journal of Gerontology.

They looked at 2,767 married couples for their research, observing them for four years. All participants were at least 50 years old. One of the researchers, Kira S. Birditt, later stated that couples who drink together are less likely to be irritated with each other. They are not necessarily happier as individuals, but at least they are not constantly bickering.

Notably: especially in situations where the women were drunk and the men were not, the women reported seeing their marriage as increasingly negative. To be honest: I can completely relate to this. I don't often turn down a drink (I think I should do that more often), but there is nothing more enjoyable than going out for drinks with your partner, right? I genuinely think that is one of the most fun things.

And when I look around, I immediately think of one relationship in particular: one where the man loves to drink and his partner does not. They have truly had the most miserable relationship I have ever seen for the past ten years.

So you know what you need to do this weekend: toast with your partner. To a long and happy togetherness.
