Love & Sex

This is how much sex couples have when they are together for 10+ years

How often do you still do it? It just depends on how long you've been together, research shows. Because after 10+ years together, we do it on average not very often anymore. A shame, but yes. Often there are children, a household to run, a career to flourish.

Too tired
Unfortunately, research has proven that we all want a little less when we are in a long relationship. 70 percent of couples had sex with their partner at least twice a week in the first year of their relationship. All of them still rosy and moonshine, so to speak. But those two times a week? That is not really feasible anymore after a long period with the same person. After five to ten years, that number is only 23 percent. Among people who have been together with their partner for more than ten years, this was barely 17 percent.

We do it the least in the age of having small children at home. Couples between the ages of 30 and 39 have on average only 86 times a year. That is certainly one time a week, sometimes two times a week. If we feel like it. For comparison: younger people between 18 and 29 years have an average of about 112 times sex in a year. That amounts to about two times a week.

Not such a disaster
What might be even sadder is that a third of people admitted to having experienced a sexless period. We are talking about the fact that couples do not have sex with each other for more than three months. It's not pleasant, but it is the truth. Do we find it an enormous turn-off if we see too little fireworks in the bedroom? Do we miss the fact that we no longer tear each other's clothes off after so many years together? Not really. More than half of the participants indicated that they find sex important, but prioritize other things. Thus, ‘talking well together’ and ‘laughing’ are seen as the most connecting, followed by sex.
