8x the absolute best excuses to cancel plans last minute

There are exactly two things that can make me incredibly happy on a Friday night. Numero uno is a dinner that has gotten out of hand with my best friend that ends with a bottle of wine on the terrace. Or two: in my comfy clothes on the couch with a bag of Bugles and herb cheese. Often it's the second one. After five days of deadlines and broken train tracks, I'm not always in the mood for people, especially not for those forced appointments with people for whom you need somewhat of a charged battery. Yes, sorry, you are up for that?
So the big question is: how do you cancel this last-minute without coming across as a jerk? Using ‘I’m not feeling well’ over and over again is slowly becoming a bit sad, so for inspiration, I’ve gathered an extra menu of options that are indeed credible. You’re just a little more comfortable on the couch under your blanket.
‘My parents are unexpectedly visiting.’
Living alone has its downsides sometimes. The toilet that just won't flush, a gigantic leak, or worse: your parents unexpectedly showing up at the door whom you can't really brush off and insist on staying for dinner. An excuse that usually works.
‘I completely forgot my grandma's birthday.’
It's only polite to stop by with a bouquet, right? Your friend will surely understand. Just be careful not to use your brother or sister's birthday (most people don't forget those so quickly) so that your excuse remains credible.
‘The babysitter canceled.’
A classic. Sometimes kids can be used as a free pass. And if you don't have one, you can also use it if you have a young puppy at home. Whether it's a three-year-old child or a puppy, I think it's all the same.
‘I no longer have a car available.’
Suddenly the car needs to go to the garage, it’s there for a day longer than expected, or someone else has already taken it. And let it rain heavily that day. What a shame…
‘My girlfriend just called me that she’s really not doing well.’
Your girlfriend is not doing well at all and she calls you to have a cup of tea. Of course, you can't bear to leave her hanging, so you feel compelled to do a check-up. What a good person you are.
‘I lost my wallet with all my cards in it.’
You’ll have to follow up on that first. Without your driver's license and ID card, you’re obviously nowhere.
‘Someone is sick at work so I have to fill in.’
This ideal excuse only works if it applies to your job. If you work for yourself or in an office, unfortunately, you’ll have to skip it. Otherwise, I’d say go ahead and take advantage of it.
‘My boss is asking if we’re going out for dinner with the team tonight.’
Especially on a Thursday or Friday night, this comes in very handy. A casual Friday drink can often end at the brasserie around the corner. And who says ‘no’ to a dinner initiated by their boss? Exactly.
