City Trips

This Dutch city has been declared the best in Europe

Best Dutch city Amersfoort

That our little frog country is blessed with many beautiful cities is no longer news. I live in Amsterdam myself, but I never consider a weekend away in my own country a punishment. I find Maastricht wonderfully beautiful and cozy, just like Utrecht. I come to Rotterdam for the insane restaurants, to The Hague for the beach and the nice boutiques, to Groningen for partying until seven in the morning... HAHA. No, Groningen has much more to offer than just nightlife. Nijmegen, Leeuwarden, Eindhoven; all equally nice. So it didn't come as a surprise to me that a Dutch city was chosen for the second time as ’best city in Europe‘. Rotterdam already took this honor in 2014, and now we have that first place again.

Only... The city that won, I have some questions about. May I have some drumroll please? And the winner iiiis... Amersfoort. Yes. Let that sink in for a moment.

‘The jury assessed Amersfoort on stones and on people, and how you connect both. And in all those areas, we have a lot to offer. We have both ancient and modern heritage that attracts admirers from outside the municipal borders. Amersfoort residents can be a bit modest when it comes to their city, but I see this prestigious award as recognition that there is plenty to be proud of,’ said Alderman Rutger Dijksterhuis.

Well, you hear it: that next girlfriends' weekend, don't do that to Valencia. Forget Rome. Paris? No, thanks. Reykjavik: we also pass on that. We're going to AMERSFOORT.
