Goodbye Mariah: this song beats ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ in the charts

By

Mariah Carey has been relying on her monstrous Christmas hit, All I Want For Christmas Is You, for many years. But she is no longer number one in the charts, as it turns out this year.

And that is surprising, because it has been on there forever. I, don’t want a lot…

The American chart Billboard Hot 100, comparable to the Dutch top 40, is consistently led in December by pop queen Mariah Carey. You might not want to hear the song anymore, but yes, it can be called a hit. You make one song and… With currently over 700 million streams on Spotify and 650 million views on YouTube, Carey is doing quite well during the Christmas season. According to the Daily Mail, the singer earns no less than €445,000 per year with ‘All I Want For Christmas’. Not a bad song, then.

But this year, Brenda Lee is the true favorite. Who, what? You definitely know her song: Rockin’ around the Christmas tree is the classic that beats them all. Most people find this old song better than Mariah's this year. Why? Maybe they are tired of that same song year after year? Brenda's song also evokes a lot of nostalgia. What is striking is that Brenda's song is really old. After a whopping 63 years since entering the charts, Brenda Lee has dethroned Mariah Carey.

The 78-year-old Brenda is delighted with her win. “A good song cannot be stopped,” she tells entertainment site Variety. “If I could jump out of my skin with joy, I would do it.” It’s a record, as it has never taken so long for a song to reach number 1. But after all these years (she was 13 when she released the song), she has finally succeeded. Patience is a clean case, so to speak.
