Wow: Joy from B&B Full of Love is accused of fraud

When you decide to participate in a reality show, it can of course happen that bad publicity comes your way. And Joy is experiencing this with his Mount Joy from B&B Vol Liefde at the moment. Now we have all seen in the program that Mount Joy is a very nice name, but that the accommodations are a bit messy. We didn't get to see much of how his B&B is doing this season — which I found a bit disappointing, because that was the case with all the participants. In previous seasons, we saw them much more at work and also how they received their guests, but this season was a bit different. Although in the case of Mount Joy, maybe that's for the better...
The website Showbizznetwork spoke with a group of friends who stayed at Mount Joy last August: the ladies had rented the country house Las Golondrinas for six nights, which cost the group 3538 euros. But when they arrived, they were, to use Petri's words, immediately not happy at all.
‘It was totally not like in the pictures. We wanted to take a dip in the pool upon arrival, but the pool water was moldy. You got itchy just looking at it. There were broken sunbeds, the sinks in the kitchen were clogged, and so on,’ one of the girls from the group tells. Joy himself comes a day later to assess the situation and suggests to the group that they will get back 3000 euros of their money. According to him, the entire amount cannot be refunded because the remaining costs go to TripAdvisor, with whom they booked.
The group agrees and rents another house for their vacation, but upon returning to the Netherlands, they have not received a single euro. They have contacted Joy's business partner, Mario, via WhatsApp. Meanwhile, Joy and his former business partner have parted ways, which means he has put part of his B&Bs up for sale. When they approach Joy for the money, they are told that he cannot help them: ‘I am currently on vacation. You will have to sort it out with Mario, he handles the finances.’
A response from Mario is not forthcoming, and therefore the group writes a bad review on Google. And that is not appreciated by Mount Joy: ‘We had come to an agreement, but unfortunately one of you has written a false and distorted review on Google. This has caused damage to our business amounting to thousands of euros. Unfortunately, we are forced to take legal action because of this.’
This is the moment where I personally would go completely off the rails and would be capable of driving to Mount Joy to demand my money back, but the group continues to communicate with them. It's quite remarkable to promise that you will get your money back but then attach certain conditions afterwards. That doesn't seem entirely correct business practice to me.
But it gets worse: according to Joy, there is actually not much wrong and they have no right to a refund, despite the fact that he previously said they would. ‘The house is in order. We have been hosting customers who are super satisfied all summer,’ the duo writes. ‘On the day of your departure, a pool specialist came by. The dirt was thrown in by people. And as a result, the pump also broke. The cleaners also confirm that the pool was clean the day before your arrival.’
Does it get even worse? Oh definitely. Joy claims that they had to hire the cleaner at 1500 euros because of this, and now he wants to pass the costs on to the group. Yep: the group that was initially promised a refund; now they are being asked for another 1500 euros on top of the more than 3500 euros. Remarkable.
Showbizznetwork has gone to get a story from Joy, who has since responded. His entire response is:
‘Let me start by saying that I will always try to resolve any dispute on location with a customer. Just like with these ladies when they indicated they were dissatisfied with their stay.
There was dirt in the pool due to a storm. It was certainly not moldy and was clean half an hour after departure, but because the ladies wanted to leave, I suggested they could get their money back, minus the service costs of 500 euros from TripAdvisor. They had to claim that themselves through TripAdvisor, as this did not go through us. We only use Airbnb.
At the time of booking, the location was still owned by the old owners, so we had to get that money back through them first. I run this location with my business partner Mario, but we have decided to part ways. This is also the reason why these B&Bs are for sale. He has handled all customer contact further. So how the customer contact has proceeded, I must remain indebted to you and ask Mario about it.’
A third story then: no mold, not caused by the group themselves, but this time due to a storm... And with a blaming finger pointing at Mario, and still the group has not received their money back. They are therefore medium enthusiastic about Joy's participation in B&B Vol Liefde, but I can understand that after this story. Meanwhile, Joy is giving courses on running B&Bs without large startup capital, but it is questionable how well he knows all of that himself. And juicy: according to Instagram account RealityFBI Joy has a habit of starting many businesses until one becomes successful, after which he lets the rest fall. I have a feeling this will have a sequel.
