Signals that you are being walked over by your environment

Well, it's been a while since I've held such a mirror up to myself. Because yes, I did this (and unfortunately still do) so often. I fear this will be a sad party of recognition for many like me: that you let your environment walk all over you too often. You might realize it, but it can also become such a second nature that you don't even notice you're doing it.

Because being there for someone else and sticking your neck out for your friends and loved ones is of course a nice trait, but not when it goes too far, you cross your own boundaries and ultimately end up with the broken pieces. Are you afraid that you will be taken for granted? If these points sound familiar to you, you may want to be a bit stricter with your environment and stand stronger in your shoes.

  • You wear a ‘mask’ with different people. You do this because you are afraid that people will find you annoying or less likable if you are yourself.
  • You are constantly on guard to see if people are looking at you disapprovingly.
  • You always have a craving for affirmation, recognition, and/or approval.
  • You set few or no boundaries for yourself.
  • You let your self-worth depend on someone else's happiness.
  • You stick your neck out for others, even when they don't ask for it.
  • You always apologize excessively; everything happens in multiples. You can also overshare and overthink a lot.
