Mays Modecollege: Celine

Go to any random party with a high concentration of hipsters and it-girls and you can bet all your gold nuggets that seven out of ten women have something from Celine. The Triomphe Belt, the Celine Triomphe Bag, a classic Trio Bag, or maybe a casual scrunchie in the hair (at a price of €320,-)
The fashion house is suddenly hot and pushes Gucci, which everyone used to rave about, into the corner.
How come? Because fashion people sometimes want a new treat, that for starters, but also because the talented Alessandro Michele left Gucci and Hedi Slimane took over at Celine. Hedi started at Yves Saint Laurent and was then the creative mind at Dior Hommes. Karl Lagerfeld once lost dozens of kilos to fit into Hedi Slimane's suits. Slimane is a genius and reintroduced the old logo (which is a mirrored letter C connected on both sides to the Arc de Triomphe).
Suddenly celebrity status
Celine has always been there, I'll tell you that, and had really good creative directors (like Michael Kors and Phoebe Philo), but since Hedi Slimane took charge, it has suddenly catapulted into the higher echelons of coolness. Dakota Johnson wore Celine on the red carpet during an event in Los Angeles. Then Chris Brown wore a Christmas sweater from Celine and suddenly it was all in high demand.
Sylvie Meis wore the woven Celine Triomphe panier (raffia beach bag) in the first photo of herself with her new love in Saint-Tropez and oh, go to an average celebrity site and you can bet there’s a Celine to be found somewhere.
Together with my business partner and good friend Marie-Caroline, I always had the dream of starting a business together. We registered Blank Space as a domain name ten years ago. Earrings, bags, women's suits; it has all passed by, but it was never the right moment or the perfect idea. Last October, everything came together. My partner had been working for her sister's company, Henriette van Marle, which was then still under the name HMA Décor, a luxury table linen brand, from London. They had already made an international name with designs of exclusive linens for clients such as
That's a nice story. Céline Vipiana started in 1945 with her husband Richard on a luxury shoe brand for children. The brand expanded further, with perfumes, luxury leather goods, and later also clothing. Céline herself remained creative director until 1997 and sold the company in 1998 to LVMH for 540 million euros.
Always nice when you know the story behind the bag, right?
