Here's what the five most common sex dreams mean

No need to deny this: we all have sex dreams from time to time. About your own partner, an ex or your celebrity crush. Not surprising, of course, that you dream about people who have (had) an impact on your life. What can get you pretty confused is if such a dream is suddenly about your neighbour, someone you dislike or that one colleague you don't even find attractive. According to psychologist and sleep expert Michael Brues, even if such dreams are sometimes about very strange people, they are perfectly normal. However, they do all have different meanings. Wondering what your sex dreams have to tell you? Here's what experts say about them:
Sex dreams about your boss
Office-related sex dreams are very common, according to therapist Holly Richmond. This is because sex dreams are often about people who are off limits, such as our boss or a colleague. If you dream this, it does not automatically mean you are lusting after your boss, but is probably about the power dynamics in the office. There is then often a relationship dynamic in which you want more control, which is being played out sexually in your dream. If you feel dirty when you wake up, experts say you can trust that. You don't want to have sex with this person, you just long for a different dynamic.
Sex dreams about someone you hate
Having sex with someone you hate can have the same charm as make-up sex. Think of it this way: hating someone takes a lot of energy, and during sex, you can drain that energy well. Also, these dreams are often another case of power dynamics, where you probably want to guard control over the situation. ‘Dreams can communicate a lot - it's just not always a direct connection,’ says Richmond.
Sex dreams about celebrities
Sex dreams about celebrities are very common and the meaning is quite simple: they probably mean that we are attracted to that celebrity. These dreams can range from crushes to dreams of a sexual nature and make us feel like we can get someone out of reach, which then usually provides a mega ego boost. Still, nice waking up!
Sex dreams about your ex
Then again, this is less fun waking up after such a sex dream about your ex. Because what does it mean? Do we want our ex back? Do we miss him or her without realising it? Are they maybe involved with us a lot? According to experts, there is no need to worry about this. In fact, dreams about ex-sex do not directly translate into wanting to have sex with our ex-partner, but we usually dream about an ex with whom we have unresolved emotions. They explain: ‘What were you trying to communicate through sex in your dream? Do you want more understanding? That he or she listened to you? Or did you want to take back your power? Sex dreams about your ex are usually about unfinished business and don't mean anything sexual.’
Sex dreams about a platonic boyfriend or girlfriend
Sex dreams about someone you have a platonic friendship with are often because we like to dream about things that are off limits. It is of course possible that you are attracted to this friend, but most likely you are having this sex dream simply because this is someone with whom you cannot have sex. Either way, don't worry if this happens. An expert concludes: ’All sex dreams are normal, so this one is too. It's just part of being human.'
