Things that help a little when you are really sad

Things that help when you are really sad

Happiness is a guest, I once read. Something that taps you on the shoulder every now and then and unfortunately also leaves. We all have sadness. The unrequited love, your loyal dog suddenly not being with you after twelve years, your parents who are getting dementia, a sick child. Some moments you have to endure, but there are small band-aids you can apply that make it a little more bearable.

1. Texting simultaneously
Choose your dearest friends and send them a message in which you express your sadness. If you do this on your laptop, you will probably see all your favorites sending you a message at the same time. As if you are collectively showered in love and friendship.

2. Wear a piece of clothing from a loved one
That big cable knit sweater from your father, that coat from your partner. It helps to physically feel the presence of someone you love on your body.

3. Warm drinks
Soup, caffè latte, tea with honey.

4. Tidying up
Make the best of it. A tidy house helps a bit with a tidy mind. You are walking around with your soul under your arm, so you might as well keep moving. I also find ironing a delightful task when I'm sad.

5. Exercising
You might not feel like it, but just do it. Go for a walk, bike, book a pilates class, or take a dip in that way too cold water. You will realize that you might not have thought about that misery for a moment.

6. A warm bath
Or a warm shower. Or a hot water bottle (much cheaper) and a clean bed. And just remember two things: you are not alone and this storm will pass too.
