The only question we have after watching the miniseries Fool Me Once

Netflix has another big hit with the miniseries Fool Me Once and I understand why: it is wonderfully addictive. Admittedly, by the end I lost track of it a bit due to all the storylines, but I have always had a weakness for series and movies with a plot twist at the end that you don't see coming. And that was certainly the case with Fool Me Once; I never expected that ending. And I was so thrown off by it that I completely overlooked something else.
Because as surprising and exciting as Fool Me Once was, I am left with one question: what on earth was going on with that Shane? This man is incredibly suspicious throughout the entire series and acts very strangely, but why?
Shane was one of the best friends of main character Maya; they knew each other from the army. Maya trusts him, that is clear. He often babysits her daughter Lily when Maya is out and does various jobs for her that are not entirely legal, such as tracking license plates of cars and trying to pry things out of the police.
But why does he also act so suspiciously? Warning: spoilers ahead.
Starting from episode 4, he begins to exhibit somewhat peculiar behavior. He suddenly appears in the middle of the night in Maya's house, without a clear reason. When they later talk about it, he says he was there to tell her something about Tommy Dark, but that could have easily waited until the next morning, right?
Then he also places a tracker on Maya's car and becomes furious with her in episode 6 when he feels she is not telling him the whole truth. Why that anger? The peak for me is that he is spying on her in the dark and waiting in Maya's house without her knowing and without her being home. Why would you do that?
Well, I have a logical answer for that: you do that when you are actually not trustworthy and have a hidden agenda. Yes, that Shane is just not trustworthy, that much is clear, only Maya hasn't realized that yet.
Only... That is not the case. The series ends and it turns out that Shane is just a good guy. HUH? As a cherry on top, his vague behavior is completely ignored.
Makers, thank you for this delicious series, could you please not mislead us like that next time and then never bring it up again? It's a bit frustrating...
