Science says: romcoms can heal a broken heart

By

A broken heart; I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Unfortunately, you don't always have control over it, and it only takes one person to end a relationship. Especially when you didn't see it coming, but even if you made the choice to break up with your partner, you need time to heal. Your heart can literally ache from sadness, and it can feel like you'll never get over it. Fortunately, I have good news for you: this feeling will eventually pass. It's a matter of time, riding it out, and binge-watching your favorite romcoms. Yes, you read that right: new research shows that watching romcoms can help heal your broken heart.

Here's the thing: movies with humor, a happy ending, and character development (think Elle Woods in Legally Blonde) bring a sense of happiness to the surface and inspire you to get back out there. Romantic comedies are particularly good at showing you that there's so much to discover that has nothing to do with lying in bed crying, making you more likely to drop your self-pity and go out.

Romantic comedies with characters who choose themselves and move on after an emotional event can also significantly contribute to the healing process of a broken heart. According to the research, this is because these films are relatable and bring a smile to your face. Think of movies like The Women, Bridget Jones’s Diary, The Other Woman, Home Again, and How To Be Single.

Do you currently have a broken heart? Then you have every permission to immerse yourself in your favorite movies, as long as you get up afterward, dress yourself, make yourself look nice, and get back out there. To quote one of my favorite Elle Woods lines: “What, like it’s hard?” You got this!
