Forget the Amalfi Coast, go to this Italian little island
Not the busloads of tourists, but all the good of Italy

Of course, Amalfi with something. And if you absolutely must wear those pumps, make sure they are a pair with an ankle strap, so your leg is broken up again. Also very nice: a nice sneaker. Nikes, Vans, Mipacha’s, actually anything works, and such a sporty shoe creates a nice contrast with the sexy skirt. fantastic and I can really dream with drool coming out of my mouth about this hotel on the Amalfi Coast. But honestly? In 2025, Amalfi is a bit... done. Overtourism has peaked, the streets are so narrow that you cause a traffic jam with your beach bag, and the climb to the beach is a workout you didn't ask for. Especially not when you've just had three Aperol Spritzes on your sunbed and then have to trudge up 240 steps. And I haven't even mentioned the sun that casually disappears behind the mountains at 4 PM. No sunset, just shade and volcanic sand. So.
Ponza: the best-kept secret of the Romans
What I really find a gem, which has none of the downsides of Amalfi, is the island Ponza. For the Romans, Ponza is what Corsica is for the French: their secret summer paradise. And yes, if the locals flee somewhere for their peace, you know you're in the right place.
We were tipped off about Ponza when we lived in Rome for half a year (by the way, if you're still looking for Rome addresses , here are my favorites) and our landlord swore by it. “If you go away for one weekend,” he said, “it has to be Ponza.” And oh yes, the boat trip from Anzio or Formia only takes one to two hours, depending on which ferry you choose. Small effort, big vacation feeling.

Ponza in 2025: still under the radar
Ponza is (still) not car-free, but it is wonderfully quiet. It is strategically located between Rome and Naples, so perfect as a stopover if you have both cities on your summer route. And if you're in Naples anyway: don't skip this pizzeria . Award-winning worldwide, so just reserve and go.

Why you'll fall in love with Ponza
- You can rent a boat and cruise around the island, including snorkeling and beach hopping without lines of people.
- The harbor is picture perfect, with those Italian restaurants where everything smells of sea and lemon.
- The village comes alive in the evening with strolling locals, flapping laundry above your head, and children with sun-bleached hair darting through the streets.
The island is small, but not too small. You have just enough to do for four days of enjoyment. After that, you want to move on, but crying. Seriously, Ponza should be prescribed by doctors.
Hollywood loves Ponza
And did you know that Ponza has also had its cinematic moments? Scenes from the Italian film classic “Swept Away” with Mariangela Melato and Giancarlo Giannini were filmed here, and the series L’amica geniale (My Brilliant Friend) also used the island as a backdrop for the summer scenes. Think: sun-drenched bays, azure blue water, and an atmosphere that makes you fall in love instantly. It's the Italy of your dreams, but without the crowds.
Ponza is the answer to Amalfi fatigue
If this year you long for la dolce vita without Instagram pressure, a thousand steps, or shadow moments in the middle of the afternoon: go to Ponza. Because believe me, this Italian beauty is everything you're looking for, but without the overload of tourists and the earwax of the neighbors on the beach.
And honestly? I would have preferred to keep it to myself. But well, when you're lying there with your fresh focaccia, a book in your hand, and a view of that clear water... then you can curse me a little.
