Nothing Dutch is foreign to me, so I don't mind complaining at will. About the weather (sometimes too cold, then too hot — never right), about the traffic jams and, of course, about the NATO summit. Why couldn't I just drive from Haarlem to Zandvoort to let the dogs (I'm taking care of a dog these days) run freely on the beach? What does Zandvoort have to do with The Hague, for God's sake? There's not even a direct connection. And when I dropped my partner off at Schiphol and wanted to go home via Hoofddorp, every exit was blocked by a military truck, as if we were at war.

From frustration to admiration
And while I had to avoid The Hague, I was channeled directly there by the highway. Anyway. I grumbled and complained. Why did this personal project (sorry, but I experienced it intensely here) of Mark Rutte have to take place right here? We were not at all prepared! And Huis ter Duin is a nice hotel, of course, but I couldn't imagine Trump being particularly happy there.

The power of the real image
But just as I complain easily, I also change my mind just as quickly. Because when I saw our wonderful queen shine in her lime green pantsuit yesterday, accompanied by Princess Amalia — who, as the English say, is “flourishing” in every way — I felt one thing: pride.

Máxima's suit steals the show
And I had to reconsider my opinion about Mark Rutte. Because celebrating the NATO summit in our small country may have been the most strategic move possible. The history of our Royal House, the beauty of Huis ten Bosch, the charm of our queen and the crown princess, and the unfiltered authenticity of our king could perhaps be the honey that binds everyone together.

Queen Máxima in a fashion classic from 2006
As I write this, I have four newspapers on the table, all talking about the NATO summit, and in three of the four, our queen appears on the cover. Incredible also that she wore an outfit she had already worn before — in 2006. By the way, I know all this thanks to Josine Droogendijk from Modekoningin Máxima, who documents everything wonderfully.

Where to buy Máxima's pantsuit?
This outfit is — as it could not be otherwise — haute couture and was made especially for our queen. But within the prêt-à-porter line of Natan, the official supplier of royal clothing, you can find something very similar. It's elegant, sophisticated, special, colorful, unconventional, and very glamorous. Just like our queen.

Amalia: timeless class with Ralph Lauren
And Amalia? Oh, I find her beautiful and charming. She wore a long dress by Ralph Lauren, as classic and timeless as she is.
