Here it is: the P. Diddy documentary everyone has been waiting for

There was a time when news about P. Diddy came crashing down on us like a tidal wave. The mountain of bizarre details about his white parties and new allegations grew by the minute. Thanks to all that information, several documentaries have already seen the light of day; but there was one we were really waiting for: ‘Sean Combs: The Reckoning’, co-produced by rapper 50 Cent. Now that the doc is finally here, we know one thing for sure: the Diddy storm is just raging on.

What you need to know about the P. Diddy case
With a case that has been ongoing for two years and so many bizarre allegations, I can imagine you sometimes lose track. Therefore, before we really dive into the doc, let's summarize the key points. The case against Diddy began in late 2023 when his ex-girlfriend, singer Cassie Ventura, accused him of sexual abuse and violence in their relationship. Diddy denied it, but when a telling video surfaced showing the abuse, everything changed.
The allegations against the rapper quickly escalated: sexual abuse, forced prostitution, human trafficking, rape, and extortion. More than 120 people filed a complaint against Diddy. Ultimately, he was sentenced to 50 months in prison for inciting prostitution, while he was acquitted of human trafficking and extortion. However, Diddy continues to maintain his innocence and plans to appeal.
What the new P. Diddy doc really shows
Not long after the first allegations against P. Diddy came to light, rapper 50 Cent announced that he was working on a documentary; a project that he claims started almost ten years earlier. The working title ‘Diddy Do It?’ has since been changed to ‘Sean Combs: The Reckoning’, but the promised revelations remain the same. According to the description, we can expect “a stunning analysis of the media mogul, music legend, and convicted criminal”.
The documentary not only looks at the current case but also dives into Diddy’s career, linking to the mysterious death of Tupac Shakur among others. Expect exclusive interviews with people who have worked closely with Diddy, and even jurors from his trial. And the real show: never-before-seen footage of Diddy, just days before his arrest. That footage sparked quite a reaction from Diddy and his team.

Rivalry in the rap game: Diddy and 50 Cent
It's not surprising that 50 Cent is involved in a doc where Diddy doesn't come off well. The two rappers have been rivals for years. While they could collaborate well at the beginning of their careers, that changed in 2006. 50 Cent released the diss track ‘The Bomb’, in which he accused Diddy of being involved in the murder of rapper Notorious BIG. And we can say that song definitely didn't make it onto Diddy’s playlist. The feud was never resolved and intensified when both artists launched a vodka brand at the same time.
After Diddy’s arrest in 2024, 50 Cent claimed he had suspected the alleged illegal behavior for a long time; the doc was already in the making. Now that the release is here, the rapper says the project has nothing to do with their feud. According to him, their rivalry was just a case of competitive energy in hip-hop culture. The making of the documentary had another reason: “If I hadn't said anything, you might assume that the entire hip-hop culture is satisfied with his actions, or with the image they have of him. After all, no one has said anything.”
Diddy’s team is not happy with the revelations
It may not be the surprise of the year, but Diddy’s team is far from enthusiastic about the new doc. They call the series disgraceful, unnecessary, very personal, and even illegal. Illegal, you say? Yes, that has everything to do with footage of the rapper just before his arrest. According to Diddy’s PR representative, Juda Engelmayer, Netflix should not have used this footage.
Engelmayer claims that Diddy has been documenting his own story for a documentary for years; and these clips were also intended for that. The collaboration between Netflix and 50 Cent, an old enemy of Diddy, is also not met with cheers. Netflix does not reveal how they obtained the footage, but insists that it all happened legally. Team Diddy tried to block the release of the doc, but that clearly didn't work. Will they leave it at that?

The impact of the doc on Diddy’s case
Could this documentary mean that Diddy stays locked up longer? No, not directly. The content of a documentary is not considered legal evidence. But still, this could have a negative aftermath for the rapper. Diddy has already indicated he plans to appeal, and that process will likely take place sometime next year.
Until then, the docuseries could significantly influence public opinion about Diddy. The jury that will judge him consists of ‘ordinary citizens’ who must make a judgment based on the evidence. In theory, they are not supposed to take the doc into account in their decision, but if some jurors have already seen the doc before selection, it could be practically difficult to completely ignore those revelations — no matter how hard they try. What the exact effect will be is still to be seen. ‘Sean Combs: The Reckoning’ is now available on Netflix.
