The Style Files: La Double J

By

If you ask me with whom I would like to swap for a day, a week, a month, or a year, the chances are high that I would say: “With J.J. Martin.” Her life goal is to wrap the world in joy and with a clothing and lifestyle brand that celebrates the most beautiful places in the world, she does quite well.

JJ Martin, the woman behind La Double J

When you see J.J. Martin, you immediately think she is one of those cases that received a sense of style with an infusion at birth. She breathes that incredibly effortless chic where everything is beautiful and stylish in a breeze.

She grew up in Los Angeles, but the glamour pretty much stopped there. In a family where she was the only girl, a lot of sports were played and practical clothing was worn. “I only got my first Barbie at a very late age because I played with my brothers” GI Joes,” says J.J.

The fashion world had to wait a bit before J.J. came to brighten it up. Through jobs in the business world, she ended up at Calvin Klein in the marketing department and then fate pushed her towards Milan, where she started writing about fashion and design.

You could describe J.J. Martin as an American by birth, but una vera Italiana by heart. In 2001, she set foot on Milanese soil and that’s where her second life began. Italy, with its stylish women, the beautiful churches where J.J. often wandered in, the paradisiacal Puglia, the amazing Amalfi Coast – it was one big living Pinterest board. “In 2001, Tom Ford was the head designer at Gucci, Miuccia Prada at Prada, and Consuelo Castiglioni at Marni. All brands that inspired me immensely,” says J.J. In an interview with The Socialte Family.

How did J.J. Martin become La Double J?

That happened quite organically. One day, J.J. decided to sell part of her gigantic vintage clothing and jewelry collection. She did this by photographing the pieces on the creative women of Milan, showcasing how they lived. That became – of course – a huge success and inspired her to design her own clothing.

It started with a dress, a pair of pants, and a shirt. Now, ten years later, there is an empire with a full, mouth-watering ready-to-wear collection and even a homewear line. I have two plates from it and believe me: your mashed avocado sandwich tastes so much better from La Double J porcelain.

 La Double J

La Double J in one paragraph

La Double J does not do warm, comfortable winter clothing or practical convenience – that may have been handy when J.J. was still the youngest in a boys' family – but now it is super feminine what time it is. Everything breathes that marriage on the Amalfi Coast, that boat trip around the Aeolian Islands, and that weekend in Venice.

The summer collection of 2025 is a – in its Martinian way – 360-degree collection of warm weather silhouettes: luxury fabrics for Venice, floral prints for Ravello and the Amalfi Coast, and steamy silhouettes for Pantelleria. From island hopping wardrobes to pareos that you can wear as a scarf and skirt, and even leggings for your daily meditation moments.

And there’s more: the collection has been expanded with necklaces, earrings, headbands (I have the raffia ‘headdress’ with which I have now checked off a hundred compliments) and charms for your bag. It’s all elegant, effortless, summery, and full of vibrant zest for life.

Stylish and mindful

The outside is important – if only because what we see can put us in a different mood – but the inside is not forgotten. J.J. Martin is the spiritual bridge between the glamorous giants and the grounded.

The motto of her brand is Raise Your Vibration, and with that, she also refers to the spiritual side. By now, J.J. has hosted more than 200 spiritual events and activations. From Comporta to a séance in Bergdorf Goodman and in Ibiza in collaboration with Hotel Six Senses. Five-star spirituality – why not?
