Con Mum: a bizarre family drama in Netflix’s latest true crime hit

True crime documentary Con Mum

When you think of true crime, you naturally think of gruesome murders and complicated disappearances; but with their latest documentary, Netflix is taking a different approach this time. And believe me, it’s still just as bizarre. ‘Con Mum’ tells the story of Graham Hornigold, a British chef who finally finds his biological mother after 45 years. But what starts as a loving reunion quickly turns into a family drama full of lies.

The meeting with Con Mum

Graham Hornigold has it all figured out; he is a successful pastry chef and is happy in love with his wife Heather. Yet there remains one major struggle: the relationship with his parents. Graham hasn’t spoken to his father in years and has never known his mother. That seems to change when he suddenly receives an email from a woman claiming to be his biological mother mother. Graham is skeptical and asks her all sorts of personal questions to make sure she is telling the truth. When the woman, Dionne, answers all the questions correctly, he is convinced: this must be her. They meet and can hardly contain their happiness; after 45 years, they finally get the chance to build a bond. However, Dionne immediately comes with bad news: she is terminally ill and has only a few months to live.

Graham is determined to make the most of this limited time together. He discovers that his mother is incredibly wealthy, according to her because she was the illegitimate child of the former sultan of Brunei and because she is a successful businesswoman. Although Graham has his doubts, he ultimately believes her. Why would his mother lie to him? The two form a close bond, and Dionne spoils her son and daughter-in-law with extremely expensive gifts. She even wants to leave her entire inheritance to them. But the more time they spend together, the more Heather begins to doubt.

A not so perfect picture

This begins when mother and son travel to Switzerland to arrange the inheritance. Although Dionne still lives in luxury, she seems to have financial problems. However, according to her, these are only temporary because it takes longer to access her international accounts due to Covid. She borrows a little from her son, who unsuspectingly agrees. Heather, who was left behind in the United Kingdom with their newborn son, doesn’t trust it and starts investigating. She discovers that Graham is not the only one from whom her mother-in-law has borrowed thousands of pounds. Intervening is difficult; Dionne keeps her son increasingly away from his own family. While Graham doesn’t see his wife and son for months, he falls deeper into debt. Only when his friends confront him does something seem to snap. No matter how much he wants to maintain the bond with his mother, Graham begins his own search for the truth. It soon becomes clear: Dionne has a lot to hide.

The consequences of Con Mum

Dionne’s lies were a huge blow to Graham; the bond he thought he had built with her fell apart. His relationship with his own wife and son also took a significant hit, partly due to the enormous debts he incurred from all this. Graham is still doing everything he can to rebuild his life. Although Dionne seemed to get away with all her deceptions, there now seems to be a change. Several of her alleged victims in Singapore contacted the police after seeing the Netflix documentary. They accused Dionne of fraud, and she now risks a prison sentence of 20 years and a fine. So it’s still a wait-and-see game to see if she will finally be convicted for her actions and if Graham and all the other victims will still get justice.

During this documentary, you go from one surprise to another. A mother can’t do something like this, can she? Curious about the whole story? ‘Con Mum’ is now available on Netflix.
