A closet full of clothes and yet nothing to wear? Try this

A closet full of clothes and still thinking every morning: I really have nothing to wear. Recognizable? Same. And the ironic thing is that buying even more clothes usually doesn't solve that problem. On the contrary: sometimes it makes it all choice stress even worse.
Where we are usually tempted on TikTok and Instagram to buy more, more, more, there is now a trend going around that goes completely in the opposite direction. Less clothing, more combinations and above all: finally wear what is already hanging in your closet. Sounds almost too good to be true, so I looked into it: is the 3-3-3 rule actually genius or just another internet hype?
What is the 3-3-3 rule?
First things first: what is that 3-3-3 rule actually? Well, the principle is surprisingly simple. You choose three tops, three bottoms, and three pairs of shoes from your own wardrobe. And then you have to make do with that. Not for the rest of your life, of course, but the idea is that you try to create as many different outfits as possible with those nine items. And here it gets interesting. Because nine items may sound like practically nothing, but by combining smartly, you can get quite a few looks out of it.

Less clothing, more outfits
To be honest: I don't think it's such a crazy idea at all. We often tend to wear a piece of clothing in exactly the same way every time. That one pair of pants goes with that one blouse, and we actually always wear that skirt with the same sweater. While there are probably many more combinations hidden in your closet than you think.
And that's exactly where I see the strength of this rule. It forces you to look at your own clothes again. Not: what am I missing? But: what can I actually do with what I already have?
My tip? Choose items that combine well with each other, but don't make it too safe. Three black basics, three jeans, and three pairs of sneakers always work, but that doesn't really make anyone more creative. Instead, throw in one striking color, print, or unique silhouette.

Is it just another hype or actually quite genius?
Am I going to live with just nine pieces of clothing from now on? Absolutely not. I find clothing way too fun for that. But as a styling trick to look at your own wardrobe with fresh eyes again? The 3-3-3 rule definitely gets points from me for that.
Especially on those mornings when you stand in front of an overflowing closet and still claim that you have nothing to wear. Choose nine items, set the rest aside for a moment, and start combining. There's a good chance you'll suddenly discover outfits that have just been hanging in your closet all this time. I dare you: try the 3-3-3 rule. I really like it.
