This is the most talked-about wedding dress ever

By

No, not the dress of Lady Diana with a train you could camp under with a kindergarten class, and not that beautiful Valentino of Máxima either. The most talked-about wedding dress ever is that of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and it is once again completely en vogue thanks to that wonderful (I am the founder, president, and treasurer of the fan club) Love Story.

Why Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's wedding dress became so famous

Carolyn Bessette was quite unconventional. While many women dream of a Kennedy-style wedding, this was a horror for Carolyn. For the youngsters among you: Carolyn married John F. Kennedy Jr., the son of the murdered American president John F. Kennedy and his wife Jackie Kennedy, later Onassis. That is American royalty and in the case of John Jr. also a particularly successful specimen when viewed from the visual side.

But Carolyn wanted nothing to do with an official wedding with hundreds of guests, including certainly celebrities and people from royal houses. No, she wanted to marry on an island without paved roads and with a maximum of forty guests.

Her employer Calvin Klein was at that time one of the biggest designers around. With his minimalist style and special campaigns featuring Kate Moss and Mark Wahlberg, he set the tone that the rest of the fashion orchestra built upon. Heroin chic, the grunge look: it all started with him.

Why Carolyn Bessette did not choose Calvin Klein

Calvin Klein was all set for Carolyn Bessette's request (who worked for him as a PR strategist) to design her wedding dress. Something that would give him even more timeless value and would smoothly push him towards royal circles.

But Carolyn, I already said she was just a bit different, did not choose Calvin.

Narciso Rodriguez, her colleague at Calvin Klein and BFF, who also happened to live in her apartment complex, was allowed to design her dress. Calvin found out when a photographer caught Carolyn and her soon-to-be sister-in-law, who also happens to be named Caroline, leaving Narciso's studio.

Calvin Klein was not amused. And especially not when Carolyn immediately announced that she was resigning because she felt her new life was difficult to reconcile with her current job. That was a firm left and a right on the cheeks of Calvin Klein, who had hoped to ride the wedding boat of Carolyn and JFK Jr. He had, after all, introduced the two to each other.

How Carolyn Bessette's wedding dress was designed

You can now imagine that Carolyn did not want bells and whistles on her dress. Traditions, fine, but she made her limits clear. For example, she did not want to throw a bouquet towards all the single women.

During drinks at The Odeon in TriBeCa, Carolyn asked Narciso if he would make her wedding dress.

For the dress, she gave Narciso Rodriguez free rein. He gave an interview to The Cut in response to the series and said that he often wanted to sit with her to sketch the dress, but she always came up with an excuse to get out of it.

“She always had to walk the dog,” Narciso says.

So he sketched what he thought she would like. But it had to be the best thing he had ever made. Not because she was Carolyn Bessette and the dress would be the ultimate flyer for his further career, but because she was his dearest friend.

“Until my children were born, she was the love of my life.”

The inspiration behind Carolyn Bessette's minimalist wedding dress

That was Carolyn herself: it had to be simple and classy.

Narciso went to Paris and worked on a number of dresses there. She liked them all, lowered the neckline a bit so that a nice wave formed, and that was it.

In the meantime, Narciso had become friends with Azzedine Alaïa and he asked him if he could show the dress to his expert eye. Of course, Narciso did not mention who the dress was for. Alaïa twisted himself into every conceivable fold to find out who would ultimately say ‘yes’ in this dress. And despite Narciso not giving any hints, he still wanted to give him advice.

He thought that Narciso should shorten the length by one and a half centimeters. That was quite a task, but he did it.

The dress, the veil, the gloves, everything had to be perfect.

Why Carolyn Bessette's wedding dress still inspires

“I just made a dress for my best friend who was getting married, but after her wedding, there were vans with camera crews from the news in front of my apartment. I could never have imagined it would become something so big, even to this day.‘

In the series (spoiler alert!) Carolyn arrives two hours late because she can only put the dress over her head and her makeup is already done. In the series, Narciso works hard to sew a zipper into the dress, but that story can be found in the fairy tale newspaper.

According to Narciso, and he should know, they were both in the bathroom when she simply put the dress over her head.

Carolyn's life changed 180 degrees after she got married, but also Narciso Rodriguez's. He was front-page news. When he showed in Paris, there were camera crews everywhere.

For Calvin Klein that might have been a dream, but the shy Narciso, who prefers to work in the background, often found it limiting.

Still, he is proud that he was able to make the dress for one of his dearest friends: a dress that has its own Wikipedia page and has been an inspiration for many. Like, for example, for Meghan Markle's dress.
