Why you really need to watch the romantic series Every After Year

By

Yes, you heard it right: there is another series that we think you should see. Or well, we highly recommend it. What are we serving up now? Every After Year. After The Summer I Turned Pretty and Off Campus there is a new young adult romance that is on the doorstep. And no: this one is not about students, but about 28-year-old Percy, who returns home after fleeing her problems for ten years. Here she must face all her mistakes and that is, uh, not going very smoothly. Do you want drama, romance, a wonderful harbor town you want to move to, and a plot twist at the end? Then this is exactly why Every After Year is the series for you.

No drama in Cousins, but in Barry’s Bay

No, we are not going back to Cousins, but to another little village where the sun always shines and everyone runs into the sea every day: Barry’s Bay. For Percy (Sadie Soverall), this is not a beautiful vacation destination with picturesque red cottages and nature where many people want to disappear into. In her eyes, this is purely a crime scene that she has tried to avoid for a long time. She certainly does not return for the good vibes, but for a funeral. A very emotional one, in fact, because it is not a distant cousin who has passed away, but Sue, the mother of her former best friend Sam (Matt Cornett). Although Percy would rather stick her hands in frying oil than see Sam again, she decides to attend the farewell anyway.

And that reunion is not exactly love at second sight. What exactly happened between Percy and Sam is cleverly kept secret by the series. Through flashbacks, you see how they fell in love as inseparable teenagers and how you, as a viewer, continuously wait for the all-destroying disaster that seems inevitable. Those cozy restaurants and the bright blue water cannot make a difference in that.

Quite a bit of emotional damage

I can hear you thinking: “But Laudonne, isn't this a series for teenagers?” Yes, in a sense, Every After Year is aimed at young adults, but that certainly does not mean that you will find it terrible. This is not a sappy story about a girl who is in love with two brothers, but a realistic drama. It is about more than just falling in love. It is about guilt, making mistakes, taking responsibility, and family ties that have become quite awkward. Because yes: this is definitely going to get uncomfortable. There will be thousands of “No, don't do it” scenes where you want to throw your chips at the TV in the hope that Percy thinks twice. Put your prejudices aside and just watch: this story will amaze you.

And to be honest: for this handsome cast, everyone sticks around. Because although there are a lot of dark pages, this story is of course about love and desire between two hotties. If you liked the yearning in The Summer I Turned Pretty, then you are going to love this. All those glances, moments when they almost touch each other and think of each other. Really: once you start, you can't stop. Bring on those eight episodes.
