Normally, I watch TV on King's Day for the outfits of the royal family, because Máxima and her daughters can really pull it off. Dresses to dream of, perfectly styled hair, and then a beautiful hat on top. But this year there was an unexpected, yet not unwelcome bycatch: the bodyguard of Willem-Alexander.

All eyes on him

While the king and his family shook hands and moved through the crowd in the Frisian Dokkum, he walked a few meters behind. Dressed sharply in a suit, brown hair slicked back, and a focused gaze. TikTok was in love, and those who weren't at a festival immediately posted about it. The situation sounds like a plot from a novel: the handsome bodyguard and the person he protects from all danger. Hours together, always close by, and meanwhile aware of each other's greatest fears and vulnerabilities. This reads like an immensely intimate book that I would pick up right away. Not that anything could ever develop between Willem-Alexander and his guard: who would be so foolish as to leave the one and only Máxima behind.

Celebs with bodyguard as love interest

Yet it's not so far-fetched: in celeb-land, it happens more often. Kim Kardashian dated Shengo Deane, who started as security for the family. It didn't take long before the two were in a relationship, and they didn't keep it a secret: fans could see how their love developed in the series in 2011. According to the ex-wife of the bodyguard, Zuzana Deane, he left her to be with Kim. Pamela Anderson and Jennifer Lopez have also fallen for their bodyguards at some point.

It's actually a dream: someone who always pays attention, who is there without stepping into the spotlight, and who, when it really matters, does everything for you. Add a tailored suit and a bit of mystery, and you've got a national crush. Next year, I'll just watch King's Day again for the dresses, the hats, and to find out if he's there again.
