Madonna gets her own Netflix docu: this is what we know so far

According to various online reports, Madonna has struck a deal with Netflix for a documentary, or rather: a seven-part miniseries. And not just any one. At least, that's what is circulating on social media. TikTok whispers, Instagram shouts, and X does what X always does: makes everything just a bit bigger (and that's exactly what I love). But what's the real story? I dug into it for you.

Madonna

It's buzzing on social media (and not without reason)

The buzz doesn't come out of nowhere. Multiple entertainment media report that Madonna is collaborating with Netflix on a limited series about her life and career, in collaboration with producer and director Shawn Levy. Just for you: Shawn Levy is not just anyone. Levy is the man behind major series and films like Stranger Things, The Adam Project, and Deadpool & Wolverine. He is known for his sense of drama, pace, and pop culture. Top ingredients you need for a story like Madonna's. His involvement makes it clear that Netflix does not see this project as ‘just a docu’, but as a grand prestige project. However, the project is still in the development phase, which means: lots of plans, still few fixed details that can be shared. But that something is coming is quite certain.

From underground New York to global icon

If this series happens (and everything points to that), we can expect a journey from the New York underground scene to global superstardom. Madonna's story is one of breaking all the rules, redefining pop culture, and claiming a place for women where it really wasn't self-evident back then. Not a tame retrospective, but a portrait of someone who reinvented herself time and again. What's not to love?

Never seen before? That could very well be the case

There is talk of exclusive material and new interviews, exactly what we want, the kind of ingredients that a series of this Madonna size should have. Less ‘greatest hits’, more delightful glimpses into her life. More why, less when. And let's be honest: if anyone has enough archive, drama, and impact for multiple episodes, it's her. I'm really looking forward to this. I'm not a fan anymore, I definitely was in the past. I find it all a bit sad. Now I really find her a bit quirky, not even to gawk at with all those medical procedures. But for a documentary, I would be ready on the very first day.

Seven episodes and millions?

They sound delightful, but are (not) officially confirmed yet. Numbers, figures, and even a possible release date are circulating online, but if I search further, I can't find anywhere that Netflix has stamped it themselves. So what you can safely say is: the collaboration is real, the project is in development, and the rest is currently speculation.

Why this format feels so logical

After earlier plans for a feature film, a series really seems to fit Madonna better. More space, more nuance, more phases, more personas. And less rush. Exactly what her story needs. We'll see.

So: yes, it's buzzing. And yes, something is really coming. Just not everything at once. But when Madonna attaches her name to something, we know one thing for sure: this will not be an average docu. This will be a moment.
