WHAT YOU SHOULD ALWAYS INVEST IN

As you know, I started some time ago with the project Decluttering. That means I’m going to get rid of all my junk and only keep beautiful things. May's wardrobe is my ideal, she only has truly good pieces and is free of piles of junk sweaters that are all just not quite right but take up space. Part of decluttering is buying good pieces. Look, a fun crazy jacket that you’re going to wear three times can cost a few bucks, but some items you just have to buy well. And yes, buying expensive therefore. Those are your investment pieces that are good forever and that you complement with trend-sensitive cheaper items. But the investment pieces then. Here we go.

A good pair of boots is absolutely essential in your closet. Spoke the woman who just spent a small fortune on new Valentino boots. No matter how much pain your credit card statement causes, you have those things for life. Or at least for a few years. Sure, you can also bravely face the world in a Zara boot, but it won’t last longer than a season and moreover, “real boots” have a bit of the same effect as a “real bag”, you always look good with them. Choose a dark gray color or black, or at least something that is easy to combine with the rest of your wardrobe. You’re not going to spend 1000 euros on a pair of boots that are very limited in use.

That you need a little black dress goes without saying, but don’t forget to buy a good cocktail dress as well. Sometimes an LBD is just too boring and you need something more cheerful. Don’t stress too much about the fact that you can only wear such a dress once. I have a bright green dress from Joseph that has proven to be a perfect party partner multiple times with different shoes and jewelry.

Spend a lot of money on this, because you’re going to wear it a lot. Make sure you can walk well in it. So leave those Louboutins aside and choose a pair from Jimmy Choo or Prada, they make very walkable heels. During the day under jeans or in the evening under your LBD or cocktail dress, with a good pair of black pumps you will go far..

We live in a country where winter reigns for months, so when you think about it, it’s actually quite strange that we usually only have one coat. All your beautiful clothes are hidden under that stupid coat and are therefore hardly ever seen. With a striking coat, your outside is also nicely dressed. We are going to New York for Fashion Week tomorrow and since it’s quite coat weather there, a good coat will be a must. I’m taking a leather jacket with me (also an investment piece by the way), a coat from Patrizia Pepe that I bought three years ago and am still incredibly happy with, and a new acquisition from Peter Pilotto, this one to be precise. Bought at the Bijenkorf with 90% discount. That’s real investing.

We’ve talked about this often: a good bag opens doors. Invest in a designer bag, it’s really worth your money. I have bags from Proenza Schouler, Chloé and Marc by Marc Jacobs and never wear anything else. They are so beautiful that they can also go out in the evening, the leather only gets better with age and they make you happy every day.

We work at Amayzine on MacBooks and I always transported them in linen bags. But when Proenza came along, I actually found that quite a sight. So it was time for a Good Bag that also fits a laptop. Enter: my red Stella McCartney gem. Also bought in the sale by the way. But really, if you have a job where you need to take a laptop or folders or whatever, invest in a good bag that fits everything.
