7 things you need to know about the Met Gala

What is Hollywood basically up to now? Getting ready for the fashion party of the year, of course: the Met Gala, or the ‘Super Bowl of the fashion world’, which takes place tonight in New York.

God, how I’m already looking forward to the funny gifs, designer dresses, and iconic group selfies that Instagram will be full of tomorrow morning, but the Met Gala is more people, a lot more. 7 things you need to know:

1. The Met Gala is almost 70 years old

The first gala was organized in 1948 and has grown bigger every year since.

2. Anna Wintour has been the co-chair since 1995

Vogue's editor-in-chief Anna Wintour has been responsible for the event for 21 years. And her whip cracks hard: if you're not cool, you don't get in. Basta.

3. Every year co-chairs and honorary members are selected for the party

Besides Anna Wintour, this year's co-chairs are Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, and Apple chief designer Jonathan Ive. Nicolas Ghesquière, Karl Lagerfeld, and Miuccia Prada will park their butts on a special honorary chair.

4. The Met Gala celebrates the opening of an exhibition

Of the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Costume Institute latest exhibition to be precise. Where more than 35 thousand pieces of clothing and accessories from the past seven centuries are displayed.

5. Every year the exhibition has a theme that inspires the dress code for the event

Last year it was ‘China: Through The Looking Glass’, this year ‘Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology’ is the dress code. What the heck should we imagine with that? I think we can expect a lot of silver and futuristic robot looks.

6. A shitload of money is raked in during the gala

According to The New York Times, the ball has raised more than 145 million dollars for the Costume Institute since 1995. Not bad.

7. Alliances are formed between celebs and designers

Because you don't count at all if you're not wearing a creation that a cool designer specially made for you. In the past, Selena Gomez and Vera Wang were a pair, Blake Lively and Karl Lagerfeld and Cara Delevingne and Stella McCartney.
